Steering hand positioning

Options are up for as many different steering methods as I can think of. How do you grip the wheel, and what justification do you use for your method? Thought it would be interesting to get as many perspectives on this as possible.

I'd agree with that, everything about how you drive seems to be somewhat relative to your mood at the time, I guess more so if you're prone to road rage.

I was after people's opinions on which results in better driving, greater/finer control, feels more relaxed etc, like pretty much else in driving, it's all personal and subjective, but I'd be interested to hear other's thoughts on it.

For the record I voted one hand at 12-ish, just feels more relaxed. I think palming the steering wheel one-handed while turning at low speed, maneuvering my Fairlane around drive-through's, poorly designed car parks and small roundabouts gives me faster control than hand-over-hand or push-pull

I drive both hands, 9 & 3 o'clock, as this was not included, I went the Large coke/ bigmac option. The hard part is stopping the fries in my lap tipping over whilst driving with my knees.

I did about 40k once without touching the wheel with my hands, I got to an intersection and had to though.

Once hand 3 oclock for me. ie to be relaxed and layed back.

i drive with one had, about 3 oclock too, the other sits around the gear stick, but quite often cornering i will use 2 hands.

Not to mention his seat is too far back. Steering with straight arms = fail

Right hand at 2 with elbow on door sill and other hand at 6 with two fingers on the wheel and arm resting on legs.

However spirited driving will see 10 and 2...

Ha ha ha... Actually I do drive like that sometimes and I drive an auto with it in D . Of course sometimes the other hand is holding a drink bottle or just on my lap, not always on the shifter.

It's only in the BA that I find driving with one hand at the 12 o'clock position comfortable, all my other cars have had their own hand positions.

Other hand positions I use in my BA are hand on each side of the airbag at 3 and 9 (not on the wheel itself) and also the one hand at 6 o'clock (only one hand on the wheel). These are all only cruise positions, I use 2 hands when actually turning.

when it's relaxed, easy going, straight line, not many cars nearby - one hand on the wheel, one resting near gearstick. For cornering, busier traffic that demands better attention, 2 hands at 10 & 2. I also have the seat fairly upright to enable me to drive with my arms bent as recommended, despite my head being very close to the roof. The better back support enables more control.

If relaxed cruising, right hand at 2-3 o'clock (and elbow on the door sill) and left hand relaxed either resting or in the 6 o'clock position. When there is any real driving involved usually 2 hands at 10 and 2.

I can't understand why people drive like this either, I have tried it and find it terribly uncomfortable and that impedes my vision of both the road and the speedo

I drive like the asian dude, but hold the bottom of the steering wheel if I'm just cruising.

If I actually have to steer or something it's both hands, or just basic manoeuvres probably just right hand on steering wheel.

I need to stop doing that, and I'm getting out of the habit, plainly becasue I acknowledge if I suddenly have to make a rapid manoeuvre it's not going to happen as swiftly as it should.

I'm surprised so many actually have two on the wheel!

well i know i regularly do the last with no hands on the wheel food in the right and left hand on the gearstick, but when not eating usually one handed about 2-3 often with elbow on the sill, and the proper 10 and 2 for spirited driving

All those people that voted 10 and 2 for spirited driving would get an instant fail, if you were to swerve to miss something, or try to correct some oversteer with opposite lock, your arms would cross each other ... then game over.
9 and 3, with your arms slightly bent is the most effective way of maintaining control of the wheel, because you have a greater range of steering before you have to move your hands.
Just watch a professional race car driver to see why.
The 10 and 2 hand position used to be a law back in the day, because that way the cops could make sure you had both hands on the wheel.

that is the standard position you must drive in at ALL times if you have a 'Sweet VL' or a 'fwully sick V-TEC'
