Ford’s new V8 – yours for just $7500

The Ford Falcon won’t get a new V8 until October, but if you’re impatient you could get one shipped over early.

Ford’s potent new Coyote V8 won’t be available in a Falcon until October, but dyed-in-the-wool fanatics could conceivably get their hands on the new engine earlier.

Ford Racing in the United States is selling the new V8 - still in its packing crate – for US$6999 ($7650).

The new 5.0-litre engine, which was recently launched in the Ford Mustang in the US, is smaller than the current 5.4-litre in the Falcon XR8, but puts out more power and torque – 307kW and 528Nm – and is more fuel efficient. The Ford Racing “crate” version matches those numbers.

But anyone buying early will miss out on the local development work done by Ford and its performance arm, FPV.

FPV is rumoured to be working on a supercharged version of the engine that could put out as much as 360kW.

Sources suggest Ford will have three different tunes of the Coyote engine, to be used in the XR8, GT and a born-again GTHO set to become the performance hero in the Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) range as early as next year.

The XR8 could get the standard 307kW, while the FPV Falcon GT could arrive with about 330kW of power - up on rival HSV's Clubsport (317kW) and GTS (325kW).
