The Single Rail gear shifter screws into the gearbox directly (and the thread is prone to failing and the shifter ripping out of the gearbox during harsh shifts) whilst the Toploader shifter is bolted on the side of the box and is controlled by linkages. And I think reverse is in a different place between the two boxes - could be wrong, been years since I've had anything to do with either.

Correct - single rails have reverse in top left, toploaders are bottom left.

And as others have said, toploaders stopped mid-way through the XB range and were replaced by single rails, and 9" diffs stopped mid-way through the XC range (and then only fitted to 351s) and then replaced with BW diffs.

yep correct,my XB GS UTE with all factory options had a 351,single rail and 9"diff.it recieved regular abuse and the single rail held up quite well,so they are fairly strong box's behind mild 351.
