Exclamation Gotta Love America !!! 9mm Hand gun NOW A Medical Device !!!!

A GUN company will market a pistol to elderly Americans that will be subsidised by the government in the same way as a wheelchair or walking frame.
The company, Constitution Arms, claims its gun, called a Palm Pistol, has won approval as a medical device for people with arthritis or other disabling conditions who have trouble squeezing the trigger on a normal firearm.

Under the deal, seniors who buy the $US300 ($460) 9mm handgun will be reimbursed by the federal government in the US, magazine New Scientist reports.

Matthew Carmel, president of Constitution Arms in Maplewood, New Jersey, said the gun was "something that they need to assist them in daily living".

"The justification for this would be no more or less for a (walking aid) or wheelchair, or any number of things that are medical devices," Mr Carmel told the magazine.

The company's sales information states: "It is also ideal for seniors, disabled or others who may have limited strength or manual dexterity.

"Using the thumb instead of the index finger for firing, it significantly reduces muzzle drift, one of the principal causes of inaccurate targeting. Point and shoot couldn't be easier."

The company informed a medical technology blog that the US Food and Drug Administration had approved it as a "Daily Activity Assist Device".

It says it has already been fielding "lots of calls" about the device, expected to available by 2010.
However, a FDA spokeswoman denied the agency had formally labelled the gun a medical device, telling the magazine no determinations had been made about the weapon.

God bless America.

I just read the story on the MSN home page. What will they think of next? Perhaps a specially modified gun that can be fired by a three year old because their fingers are too small to grip the trigger on a 9MM.

After all, it’s in the constitution, so why not?

Don’t you just love the name of the gun’s manufacturer?

I just got this image in my mind of an old granny using a walking frame and with a stocking over her head holding up a convience store.

Given that it is America, it might just happen.

Guns have been medical tools for years.

Euthanasia being their most common use...

If seniors have problems with the trigger be cause of arthritis, weakness etc, believe me that they would never be able to load the bullets into the magazine.

There are plenty of gizmos to help load mags without any pressure needed.

Just because we cant load them dont mean we cant use them and I hope they make one with more than one in the hole just in case we dont hit what we want with the first one...

i bought a UPlula to help load my mags, but i never use it anymore haha i figured i should man up and stop being a sissy on the IPSC scene by needing something to help me load my mags lol

and xtremerus makes a fair point. the general public does not know jack about gun laws, and regulations or anything. the only people that have half a clue are the ones that are interested in it, or are actually licenced shooters.

The double stack mags seem to be worst. There's no disgrace in using the aids though.

I hope it does not work in reverse... I can think of nothing worse than when it comes to crunch time and the projectile dribbles out of the barrel.

Here here....

The all important 2nd amendment which is constantly under attack.

The latest one is called the "Constitutional Convention", they want to re-write the Constitution....good luck to them I say, just don't upset the 100 million registered gun owners in the US!

FTW...........subsidised weapons for the societal demographic that is least able to hold their hands steady , need bifocals to recognise themselves in the mirror and are least able to make quick witted and reasoned judgements without being impaired by BULK pain , blood pressure , arthritis , alzheimers medications on a daily basis.............

What about the poor old wheelchair bound seniors........will they get the automatic bolted to chair versions that work by using the wheelchair joystick ?????????...........I can see them suing for discrimination.........

Ahhhhhhhh...........the land of the free.

That is pretty close to reality. There is a bloke down Bega way that goes hunting in a 'chair. Not sure if he is a para or a quad but he has had some articles on his achievements in the local rag. Apparently he can lie in wait for days...
