Default Vegemite - A thing of the past?

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574...000540,00.html

Discuss.

Personally. I am angered at this. Just because some health freaks are worried about the fat/salt/sugar content. If they don't like it, don't buy the bloody stuff.

Definitely not happy little vegemites are they

Comrade Kev is not THAT silly, banning vegemite, the staple diet of the Aussie battler would be about as clever as banning beer.

The ramifications would make jackboots last election debacle look like a landslide win........

OH NO!!! What am I gonna have on me toast in the mornings!! I cant see it being banned...the public outcry would be so vast.

I dont think any politician would be game enough to take that battle on! If you want to talk about high salt/sugar etc...ban all the fast foods and softdrinks first!

Its ok everyone, the government has acted on this important topic...

http://news.theage.com.au/national/k...0108-7ccq.html

Keep your hands off my Vegemite: Gillard

January 8, 2009 - 11:24AM

Acting Prime Minister Julia Gillard says there is no way she is giving up her breakfast ritual of Vegemite on toast.

A shadow has been cast over the future of the iconic spread as a federal government taskforce considers special taxes and other deterrents on the sale of fatty, sugary and salty foods.

But Ms Gillard on Thursday said Vegemite's future on Australian grocery shelves was assured.

"I am a very happy Vegemite eater and there is no way in the world that Vegemite would be banned in this country," Ms Gillard told reporters in Melbourne.

"Vegemite is part of being Australian, part of our history, part of our future and I'll be continuing to wake up in the morning and having it on my toast."

The government set up the taskforce last year to recommend ways to tackle preventable health problems such as obesity, which cost Australia an estimated $8.3 billion in 2008, according to a report in Thursday's The Australian newspaper.

The taskforce's final report, due in June, is one of the most eagerly anticipated of all the health reviews under way, the newspaper says.

Best post!
Sums it up perfectly.

Human beings, in general, (I know better then to avoid the swear filter) They will blame anybody and everybody (government, advertising, availability even in Vegimites case) but refuse to take responsibility for their own actions.

mmmm Vegemite is o/k cool i love it

but looking at the article it could have big reprocutions over a vast array of industries

think about the sugar side for a start

for those that home brew beer what is one of the ingredients sugar and what is in the everyday soft drink we enjoy every day sugar

now if they bann sugary drinks ect or impose taxes on them what are we going to drink water well there goes the 155 ltr usage thing we have here in vic

and as Geez Louise said I dont think any politician would be game enough to take that battle on! If you want to talk about high salt/sugar etc...ban all the fast foods and softdrinks first!
i think we will see a crap load of people out of work being the big guys like fosters group C.U.B coke a cola and pepsi will pull out of the country

my 2c worth

They wont ban it, they will just put an extra tax on it, that way the pollies get an extra slice of the pie as well. Also making themselves look good to the do gooders. Look at the alcaholic mixer drinks they put extra tax on they have basically proved it didnt work but it is still there. (ha ha) They, win we loose.

Exactly, they will want to look good for the minority and make the majority pay so they (politicians) can continue to have it on their morning toast.

I actually don't understand the big 'vegemite is great' thing myself as I think it is rather revolting. I much prefer home made jams etc

is it just me or are we moving closer to one of those societies in movies where a governing body controls every aspect of out life where we are told what time how often and what we eat when and what we drink? its disgusting im not a mindless zombie, give us the information and let us make an informed decision about how we live our lives!

What a farce. Who authorises these 'taskforces' anyway? What a waste of our (taxpayer's) money.

If they do implement the 'fat tax' - why should Vegemite be exempt? Because it's an Aussie icon?

It's not Aussie - it's American now.
Same with Arnott's, etc.

Typical of the government, implement some scheme that's ridiculous to start with, and then complicate it even further by introducing arbitrary exemptions.

If they want to persist with the tax, then tax everything with fat/salt/sugar content above whatever threshold they decide.

Governments need to learn the KISS principle.

So a product owned by an American cigarette company (Kraft owned at least in part by Philip Morris) may get banned.... hello... It's probably not the worst thing they make and sell here. Are they going to ban Cigarettes?
