10kw short of the target must be pretty dissapointing. But so, what you have done is pretty impressive. And I'm confident your gonna keep tyring for teh extra 10. lol.

Now with all that extra power you're gonna need some bigger brakes right??:

I wonder how it would breath with a straight through 2.5" exhaust. I wonder how much power it would get if you unbolted the carback as well.

I'd need an extra 10kw to carry your brakes around!!!!!!

Bigger brakes are are possibility down the track.

I'll also try an video the car now....only thing is my camcorder needs a repair, and I think it will be cheaper to buy a new one.....so it won't happen soon

For us "old blokes' that figure translates into around 125 Horsepower! and it's only 3 Killowatts short of the "claimed" flywheel rating. That's pretty damn good!

Steve, was the Tune done on a day with relatively low ambient temperature? Mine was done on a pretty hot day from memory. And imho that should make a difference.

We tried everything that we could /can timing /dropping the exhast / different cold air systems etc what we ended up with was the best power and throttle response that this engine would produce , I wanted to crack 100kws at the wheels but on our Dyno it just would not happen. Regarless of the top end power the car is a real rocket don't let the Dyno graph dissapoint you

melbzetec, I wouldn't be disappointed. It would be a massive increase over the stock engine - half of that zetec engine is now a Ford Racing engine!

I've seen a similarly frustrating scenario before. My mate has an old Lancer (1.5L engine), which was 48kw at the wheels on the dyno (stock). So he modified the air intake, throttle body, headers, de-cat, exhaust, etc and put it back on the dyno. It went up to a massive 56kw at the wheels (hehe)

He wasn't happy, so he put a massive garrett turbo in it and it went up to ~120kw at the wheels.

I'm not saying you should turbo it - your NA zetec engine sounds like a masterpiece as it is, and I take Herrod's word for it when they say it is a real rocket!

Guys, don't get me wrong, the engine is fantastic, and the power delivery is very very smooth. Give it a little spirited driving and it's brilliant (taking a corner with a little heel and toe, and powering out is sublime). I'd love to take it back to Oran Park and really give it it's legs.(Sadly no longer with us)

The numbers actually don't mean a great deal......it's just that Rob and I had an expectation that they'd be just a tad higher.

But I really don't think I'll be chasing bigger numbers in the future. It's more about smoothness and driveability and good power delivery to me. After all it is my daily driver, not a track beast. Heaven help me if I became a Dyno Queen. (mmmmm I can almost hear Adam tapping the keyboard now with a comeback on that statement!)

I've only had about an hour behind the wheel so far, so I am looking forward to get really familiar with the engines new personality.

(It's interesting, I think I drive by ear! I think you get used to what your engine sounds like at certain revs and certain speeds. When you change the engine dynamics, I think you have to re familiarize yourself with the engine, it's sweet spots and shift points)

i know exactly what you're talking about.
I'm still getting used to the XR and i find myself shifting at about 5-5300rpm out of habbit.
I realised what i was doing one day and ran it out past 6500. Jesus H. Macy! It's a whole other world up there.

Oh and as for Oran Park, it's not quite dead yet. My car club is running one more supersprint down there in december. Full circuit too. Check it out www.hdcc.com.au. There's not much on there about it, other than a mention on the club calendar, but it's going to be one of the last events there.

You gotta have a CAMS L2S license and membership with a CAMS affiliated club tho.

I'm trying to convince myself to run the xr5 there, it's very tempting.

Well, here is a BASIC print off Rob's Dyno which is nowhere near as comprehensive as Steve's. Sorry Rob and John!

Doesn't look much (65fwkw) on paper but as the boys have said it's how it drives which is the important part. I can tell you from my trip back from SFS via the Snowies that it's a marked improvement. Also (if you can see it) there was a dip in torque and then it "took off". This is exactly how it felt as I drove it and it was frustrating but I'm happy to say that it's now got a lot more torque from as little as 1,500rpm and the aforemention characteristic is gone. No idea why it but it may have something to do with it being an Automatic??? I must also admit that since I've gotten back from SFS I've only driven it to Bathurst and it easily handles the climb up River Lett. Economy: Well I can't really tell but I feel as though it is slightly less economical but I'm happy to trade that for what I have now. Smoothness: Wayway smoother as I believe the Transmission is also controlled by the E.C.U. and now it's got the new program in it it shifts much smoother and revs much much better. When the weather turns and the ambient is lower this is when it's going to be really noticeable.

There's been for quite a while now a VERY annoying drumming/rattling from what I think is the exhaust, maybe one of the mufflers, that I will have to have fixed. Actually contemplating the header/exhaust system from the ST170 so that will no doubt liberate it from the standard one and maybe get me some more killowats. That's the plan anyway but I could get a custom set-up. I just don't want it noisy or boomy!

Steve, was the tune done on a hot ambient temperature day? Also, have you still got the same CAI or now the Sport Technologies AI??

I still have the Pipercross Viper intake, and the day wasn't particularly hot when it was tuned

Sorry for the late smart remark Steve. I haven't been on the ball lately. But I would rather you be a Dyno Queen than a Drag Queen because that is something I don't want to see.

Excuse my ignorance, just new to Focus'. What is involved with "a tune" ? The results from the Dyno for Melbzetec from redline to blueline seem impressive enough on the assumption that HP increased with the headers as well.
I'm thinking of going this far at least.

Got a price for the X-force headers and system. Other than handbult any other or better options anyone can suggest ?

The standard car computer (ECU) is designed for the standard engine with restrictive intake and exhaust. It also has a lot of safe-buffer built in how much fuel is injected in the case the owner does not care what fuel they put in.

What they do in the tune is plug in the ECU to a tuning computer and adjust figures in there to make the most power for a modified engine - which usually reduces that safety buffer that you can only run premium petrol. There are generic tunes available but these have an element of safety buffer due to different engines they are applied to.

I dont think thats a bad effort at all actually. When you think good pinto's etc do around 100-130BHP.
