Default Insurance - P Plater

That time-old question; how the hell does a 19 year old with an FG XR6 get insurance under about $1100 minimum?

I've tried all the big providers, Just Cars, AAMI, Bingle, RACV etc. to try and get some sort of decent quote, and they all came in around the $2k mark.

Best I got was through work. I work for a credit union and we sell CUNA Mutual insurance as part of it. Even then, with staff discounts and what not, still $1100, with joint policy holders (both me and my dad)....

Anyone got any suggestions?

That's what I'm thinking unfortunately... It's so stupid, because I got a quote for a 2010 model that I was going to buy until they jacked me around on price, about 4 weeks ago, and it was about $840. Now they've had a 15% price hike accross the board and they wont insure a 2009 model under $1100... =/

How the hell are you insuring an XR6T as a P Plater?

And I just got off the phone to youI, which I found absolutely hillarious:
Insurance Guy: "Ok, we can insure you forrrr.... around $804..."
Me: "That sounds ok..."
Insurance Guy: "So it works out to be $8200 a year"
Me: ".... What?"

$8,200 a YEAR. I laughed. Alot.

Insurance companies are more than happy to insure a p plater driving a V8 or Turbo (ie more than happy to take your money)..they just won't pay the claim. Im not driving it just yet too risky..on my opens next month.

Ahhh, that'd explain it. Yeah, I knew that they wouldn't honour a claim for it (I actually sell insurance as part of my job)

$1100 is good. I'm a rating 1, 24 years old and i pay $750 for my 06 BF - looking at a quick quote online for a new XR6 and even I'm sitting around $990 a year (Major providers).

A tip for anyone who's getting a face-to-face quote in my situation; go joint policyholders with your parentals. Takes a huge quote down to a smaller one.

Interesting to know considering I'll be getting a 10' - 11' FG XR6 in a couple of months time. I'm with Just car right now for my EB at $320 a year (3rd party + Fire and theft) but from some of the online quotes if I had the FG (Comprehensive) were around $2000-2500 a year. $1100 sounds bloody good to me, I hope I can find something like that D:

AAMI were the best price I could get at 1300 (bearing in mind that the $1100 was through work and a fairly well doctored quote).

The thing that burns me the most is I have a valid quote for a 2010 FG Xr6 with a 6sp there for 870, full comp and insured for 31k.

But I can't take it out because I've got an 09 model 5spd, hence the requote. And as a result of the floods etc. all the premiums have gone up 10-20% this week (unfortunatly I had no warning of this) to compensate. 900 + 20% = the now 1100 quote. Really bleeding.

Ah okay, well I haven't tried AAMI yet, will do that now, but for quote on a 2010 or 2011 FG XR6 6sp Manual it's been around the same $2kish area for me.

I'm not up with the current laws regarding what 'P' platers can drive but how is an XR6T legal for a 'P' plater?? If it is legal there's no point in having restrictions at all... you probably wouldn't find a more dangerous 'new' car for a youngster than an XR6T ute.

This is probably a good place for the Government to start in stopping the growing number of deaths occurring among young, inexperienced, poor drivers. From memory, when I was a 'P' plater(late 90s / early 00s) you weren't legal in a V8 or turbo.

He is legally allowed to own the car, just not drive it. Unless you're in W.A I think (?)

I also don't think you should change the topic to young deaths on the roads, we are discussing insurance here good sir.

the only insurance i have on my falcon is the $50 bull bar on the front. been driving it 3 years now. hit 5 kangaroos, 3 birds and and someone reverse into the front of my car, and all i've had to to and straighten and re-weld (when old mate tried to drive over my car) and replace a head light lens from one Roo.. Only thing to bring my car to a halt (for the time being) is an engine bay fire, where the $40 fire extinguisher saved the majority of stuff from being destroyed. $100 to get that car home, and $200 to get another car home to wreck and fix mine.

all up insurance & repairs for me for three years has cost like $600

but then again i don't drive a $35,000 car, i called AAMI for a quote on a $12,500 2005 falcon and they wanted $2,400 for comprehensive for a year....

Pfft, it was $2500 a year for my WS Fiesta when I turned 18, my LV TDCI Focus was $2200

Then $1779 now with Just Car.

So I'd be happy with $2K lol especially for a "Sports" model Falcon.

Then you hit someones Lexus LS600 and end up having to pay for their $250,000 car because you don't have insurance.

Well, I just signed my insurance up today.
19 year old P Plater, no insurance history, 2009 FG XR6, 5spd auto.
$720 a year, full comprehensive.
Only catches are; Dad is on the policy as a Rating 1 driver & my basic excess is $1000 + $350 for Under-25 driver.
