Default Leaked order guide shows Ford Mustang will get 10-speed auto

Quote:

Ford Motor Company [NYSE:F] will continue its tit-for-tat game with Chevrolet when it installs a 10-speed automatic gearbox in the 2018 Mustang, according to information accidentally leaked to the Blue Oval's dealerships.

Ford and General Motors Company [NYSE:GM] have made unlikely partners working on a joint-venture 10-speed automatic that was originally said to be intended just for the Ford F-Series and the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra. However, the gearbox was also recently announced for the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, leading to widespread speculation that the Camaro's arch rival would also get it.

Confirming some earlier rumors, a forum member at Mustang6g found that a 10-speed automatic transmission option for the Mustang shows in Microcat, the database used by Ford dealership parts departments. Listed under its internal code-name 10R80, the transmission shows up alongside the Mustang's current 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes.

The database doesn't actually give any details about when the transmission is likely to be installed in Mustangs, but speculation generally points to the 2018 model year, when the Mustang is tipped to receive a subtle update.

The Mustang GT, with its thirsty 5.0-liter V-8 engine, seems the most likely candidate to get the gearbox as a way of improving the pony car's highway fuel economy figures, but the Shelby GT350 or perhaps even a new performance model (Mach 1?) are also possibilities.

But don't just look for Ford and GM to tout the 10-speed for its extra ratios. GM has already pointed out the gearbox's quick shifts, which it says best Porsche's dual-clutch transmissions. It'll be interesting to see if GM and Ford go after each other in their advertising once the transmission makes its way into the 'Stang, however.

That is the stupidest thing i have heard. If true where do these people live Himalayan mountains.

10sp will be useless around most Australian roads. My XR8 already does around 1200rpm at 100kmh

If they want to do something put in 6sp & 90l fuel tank.

Who buy's a V8 for fuel economy.

10 speed Auto would serve better behind a diesel, where the power band is smaller.
yet they end up in American Muscle cars.

But the ratio's are stacked closer, so performance and economy is improved.

I say wait till you try it before you sprout the old "how many gears do you need" line.

If the engine had a power band of 1500rpm, then for sure +10 gears will do wonders. But the 5 litre V8 engine has a power band of several thousand rpm say 4000-5000rpm and plenty of TQ too... Not sure what advantage there is with 10 gears mated up with the V8 except for keeping up with the GM's.

The gearbox will weigh almost as much as the engine.
when it breaks, it will cost more than a new car to repair,
and driving will just be a constant series of gear changes.

Are we sure this will be an actual gearbox?
Not a CVT with "10" positions?

My old man ordered a GT mustang about a month back, wonder if he would get the 10 speed as the standard auto when his is built? As he has to wait 12 months or so.

F Series is the backbone of Ford's development, particularly RWD vehicles so it should come as no surprise whatsoever that a gearbox designed for it would make its way to Mustang. Ford are not going to develop a smaller Mustang only gearbox, with or without other OEM's.

Really? Or are you exaggerating for dramatic effect of your story?
I don't know of any xr8's that pull 1200rpm at 100km/h out of the factory. I would suggest maybe 1400-1500 at best.

Come to think of it, I don't know any cars with a 6sp auto that would pull 1200rpm at 100km/h. Anyone enlighten me here........?

With factory 245/35/19 tyres and with factory 2.73 ratio behind the ZF you get @ 1550 rpm at 100klm/h and @ 1750 rpm at 110 klm/h on cruise.

Seeing that news of a 10sp was in development for a few years....not really a surprise about the news.

Guess what other models will this box make it into.

Are they really calling it 8r10 or did you make that up? Based on previous gearboxes it would be along the lines of 10R80 to 10R140

People said you don't need more than 6 gears. But drive a Ram or Dodge 5.7 Hemi V8 with the 8 speed and compare it to the old transmission. It's like night and day. Bring on the 10 speed. An engine only hits peak power at one spot in the rpm range. More gears means the closer you can keep it to the sweet spot. Go to a CVT and you feel like you have a slipping clutch and higher parasitic losses.

From all reports the 10 speed is lighter than the 6 speed.

CVT's can't handle torque though. And they are rubbish anyway.
