Default Suicide Doors

Ok we all know what they are but, why are they called 'suicide' doors?

Last night my dad told me and I laughed as I thought he was joking, So I want to know what others think, I could be wrong..

http://www.answers.com/topic/suicide-door
gives an explanation, but I'm not sure how that relates to suicide.

I always understood it to be due to the rear hinge, if they actually accidently opened while driving the air flow would actually force them completely open.. hence you are more likely to fall out.

I actually got told that they are called suicide doors because if u opened them up and a car drove past u and crashed into ur car, u would be chopped in half if u were getting out of the car, cause the doors would close on u?

Now I can't see happening, it's not like being in an aeroplane.

I always thought they were called that cos if you had a car with them, you may as well be commiting suicide.
