I have just purchased a lovely 72 GT V6 capri and the VIN (CK17etc) is stamped on the passenger side shock tower, in smaller sized letters and numbers than I have normally seen. I can't see any VIN stamped on the drivers side shock tower but there is a strut brace in the way, plus it's been repainted. I am wondering, is this VIN stamped on the passenger shock tower original or something done by someone else at a later date? Should I be concerned?

The chassis number (CK number) is normally found on the drivers side shock tower for '71-'72 models, and the slam panel for '69-'70 models.
Without actually seeing the car, from what you describe it sounds like the number has been stamped by someone else. There should only be a 4 digit number on the passenger shock tower, which is not the VIN. Most strut braces would cover the area of the chassis number on a '72 model, which is stamped in a circular manner around the hole for the strut top. The number runs between the outer most strut top bolt and the front most strut top bolt. I'll see if I can find a picture as a guide. Happy to have a look at pictures for you if needed. No need for a picture, i know where the VIN should be, thanks anyway. I guess I'll just have to rip the strut brace off to see whats underneath. I just thought it was weird that it was stamped on the other side. I'm not too worried about it being dodgy but it is in the back of my mind.

Here is a photo of me on the way home with my new car. All the way to Perth from Sydney, so I had to stop in at Bathurst!

Looks good, nice one.
Long drive to bring the car home, but you would have got a good feel for it. |

It was a long drive yes and I certainly got a good feel for the insanely stiff suspension but it was a great drive. I especially enjoyed the drive up and through the blue mountains and overtaking whilst on the nullabor!
