Default 50% off 12 Month Rego for VIC Trade Apprentices

Found this on OzBargain, quite a generous offer from the Victorian Government / VicRoads:

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/22..._newsletter_am

Link to VicRoads page:

https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/regi...ation-discount

NSW has a similar discount:

Thats alright, the previous Victorian state government fired 18 of my teachers, cut my class time and doubled my school fees when I was an apprentice, at least this one is looking after them.

Might have something to do with them not being re-elected ;)

Only applies to union run trades. It's a vote buying exercise.
Lowest paid trade is hair dressing. They don't get it.
Second lowest paid trade is motor mechanic. They don't get it either.
All the union run building trades get it.

would have spent that easily on training over the last 25 years becoming dual trade but thats prob why im on triple figures plus severence, income protection, company car,uniforms,36 hr week etc and no overheads.enough of the chest beating.the only reason half the apprentices are doing it tough is they dont know how to save.i started my apprenticeship in 90 with the recession we had to have ,and most young people would die if they had to go though that now

I was doing another trade 7 years ago. There was a Rebate available for Apprentice and Trainer.
Me: ( to my Boss) give me your details, and I'll fill out the form for the Rebate.
Boss: DON'T DO THAT! My van hasn't had Registration for a few years...

What is not a vote buying exercise these days, good to see some apprentices get something out of our miserable government instead of seeing our tax money spent on politicians or the well off people!

It'd be a good idea for any students doing tertiary or further study, within reasonable parameters. Those at universities from my experience tend to struggle a lot more than the apprentices I know who drive around in near new Ranger's or Hilux's with lift kits and the works, towing their dirt bikes with them. Perhaps offer a rebate based on their taxable income if they qualify as a "low income earner" participating in full time study.

I can agree with that I was financially poorer when I was at uni vs apprenticeship. But Uni students here in NZ get alot of interest free student loans so I mean. . . .

I think our interest free student loan account is currently sitting at 14.7 Billion Dollars.

waste of money in my opinion, just a token to give the illusion of helping
it should be spent making more training positions available or getting high school techinal classes back up and running.

my old high school used to have the best woodworking, metalworking, automotive and engineering departments but they have been cut and trimmed since i left due to cost cutting.

I think it is an incentive to keep apprentices to their full term, I don't see where is says it is limited to "union run trades" Can anyone provide tangible evidence of this?
Bill.

Yes students get loans or HECS-Help in Australia (I am one of them), but they are not getting paid to be there and often work low paying jobs in retail or hospitality on top of studying (those who receive youth allowance/ study help get just enough to scrape by). I noted down my physical time spent working with uni and paid employment; the least hours I worked were 40 hours p/w and varied up to 70 hours p/w during busy periods. Apples and oranges I know, but singling out certain apprentices or trades doesn't seem fair to many of the other younger people studying, apprentices included, that are probably earning less money.

Apprentices qualify for youth allowance and tool rebates/ assistance I'm pretty sure. I think some tuition fees are subsidised by the government too.

As an apprentice I have had zilch in terms of tool rebates or anything like that, my tool kit was an insane outlay. However financially I struggled allot more at university than I am at the moment.

Our NZ Goverment need to fix this. I have 2 x sons at uni. They will have students loads bigger than any mortgage I ever had!!! Govt till me I am rich, they need get thier heads out of the sand.

If this govt does not invest in apprentships (in the old days there was cash and tax incentives to employ apprientices)

There will be no replacements for me as I am the last of the baby boomers (1946-1965)

NSW TAFE changed this year to Fee for Service, which changed fees, depending on how qualified you are. Now you can go from Certificate I, to Cert. II, and higher, for the old $400-500/year. But if you've got a Degree or Diploma, going back(wards) to re-train and do a Certificate III (Trade qualification), no Government subsidy means $8000-$10000 /year fees .
I'm not sure how NSW TAFE went this year with enrolments, but there was talk of Government Loans, like HECS.

As an adult Apprentice under an Apprenticeship Scheme ,my 1st & 2nd year were subsidised with $100ish per week. (I can't recall, exact $). A mate already financially established used his subsidy to pay for a Spa.
The Apprenticeship Scheme also had other incentives , like the Registration Rebate, Tool allowance ($750), and the employer gets a couple of decent payments ($1500-2000).

Should be made available to all full time students.
When I did my first degree, worked 3 casual jobs just to make ends meet. A discount on rego would have helped, especially to offset the "under 25" insurance premium.
