Hey Mick, did you ever narrow down the problem? Doubt you still read this, but gonna try anyway.

I also have a 2008 XR4, the dashboard lit up like a xmas tree and the power to engine cut out in the middle of the road.

After charging battery, it still only have 12V whilst moving, so assuming alternator. You post has made me think something else is causing the alternator issue...

Any info appreciated!
