restoring a 68 falcon 500 and want to know if sand blasting is too harsh on some panels ???

Oh I can see the replies in the negative here... but yes sandblasting is too harsh on panels. It should only be used to actually remove rust, not paint.
Can be used ok on subframe and suspension etc where you have thick metal to work with. Media blasting is better suited to panels as it doesnt remove any of the steel from the panel.

No, media blasting uses plastic beads or even some form of "nut" shell...
It perfectly harmless to panels. Soda blasting as the name suggests uses ..er... soda. The only problems with soda blasting is that if the panel isnt cleaned properly before painting it will lead to paint adhesion problems. (As i found one on one panel I had done).

my panel beater who specializes in resto work has told me, that he has seen some cars that have been restored years ago and have small cracks appearing in the metal. he thinks there is a very good chance it is from sand blasting. basically he does not recommend it - there was nothing to be gained by telling me, because my car has never and more than likely will never have any blasting done on it
short of sandblasting extractors and pretty much blowing them away (not necessarily the same as blasting panels), i have no personal experience. his idea does make sense to me though |

Media blasting is the go. Just bear in mind it takes ages to get all the media out of places you never thought exsisted!!!!

I owned a blasting business for about 5 yrs ,there is nothing wrong with blasting panels ,i used garnet as the abrasive and low pressure is the go ,i never did bonnets or boot lids on the inside cause it will stuff them ,there is no residue left after blasting with garnet ,just blow off with an air hose and paint ,i had no problem with the older cars ,but id be a bit careful with a later one ,the metal is a lot thinner

years back i had an xy wagon rolling shell with doors n tailgate (no front end eg: fenders bonnet grill) sand blasted throu out inc roof and no problems or buckeling and they had a large roof
was realy happy with the blast and the way they cleand it ready to etch prim and had the car for about anouther 10 years after and the only problem i ended up encounting (no fault of the blast) was i got badly t boned on the drivers side

yes still (as money n time permit) doing the rebuilding the zh fairlane with a clevo 400m 4v heads injected whipple blown with aode 4 speed trans to a 9" ....... we'll get there eventually just remember don't be afraid to try something new.
