Would be a costly exercise computers, antilock brakes, driveline would need upgrading, car will have to meet the pollution laws of the doner engine car, etc if you are seriously contemplating the swap best talk to an engineer as it will all have to be signed off by one in NSW but I guess the rules change state to state but it has been done and IIRC there are pictures and a build thread of an x series car (maybe an XY ute) with a boss 260 in the projects section.

IMO do it!
I have dream of building a white dead stock looking XW or XY incl down to every detail incl bench seat and hubcaps, column shift auto. but have the full running gear of a XR6T fitted. Yeah not easy but jeez it would be ultimate weapon, smooth, quiet and deadly fast in a light XY, even with a dead stock engine. |

What...retro modding great. A boss 5.4 can be had with a shker aswell, plus heaps of supercharging options.
If you have the funds the I say do it.

Would love to see this done!
I have also been pondering an idea of putting a modern motor into a '62 XL wagon resto project I am planning. A few years ago my mate put a 5.0L efi motor from a VP commodore into a 1978 HZ Kingswood... looked great and went well too. Old skool looks, modern grunt! I dont recall this being extremely expensive? (or maybe it was and he didnt tell me)

It was always designed to fit a Windsor so stuff like engine mounts and all that stuff line up. And with a cable throttle its much easier to get working electronically as the electronic throttle of the Boss is a bit of a nightmare getting it all hooked up and working. And it been done plenty of times so there's no lack of info. And if you wanted more cubes you can swap the AU top end onto a 351 Windsor roller block, 400+ cubes if you want to stroke it too. Need to swap the 5.0 lower manifold for a 5.8 litre lower. |

Heres my take. If you have heaps of cash and patience do it. If not build a hydraulic roller, alloy headed, multipoint injected cleveland. Put a modern transmission behind it with a four link 9". Cheaper, yes (depending how much you do yourself), easier, yes, cool as faaark, yes. Stay semi-sensible on the cam and converter and it will still go like hell, get reasonable milage and you won't have to comply with modern emission regs.

It has been done.. and there was a feature car on street fords (I think) about 6 or 7 yrs ago which had the dash from the doner car (honestly cant remember which model) and a late model injected V8 and shaker fitted.

I reckon do it - but go for F6 running gear (it will fit easier and will be quicker than a Boss 5.4)

These guys make kits to allow the modular V8 to be fitted into the late 60s - early 70s Mustang/Falcon engine bays.
https://www.rrs-online.com.au/shotgun-modular-v8.html. Dunno what coin is required.... but at least they've done the hard work for you !?? D

How awesome would it be to go all out.. Unstitch inner doors and swap them over with new falcon, engine, box, diff, dash, seats the whole shebang. A lot of custom parts and money but would make for one neat retrotech.

Rather than the Boss 5.4L i'd get a 4.6L Block Bored and stroked to 5.3L, you can get it in Injected or Carb form, it will make all the power of the 5.4L but is phisically smaller and lighter being an alloy block, love to rev aswell.
My understanding is any 5 or 6 speed that fits up to a 5.4L will also fit the 4.6L block. Beyond that i wouldn't fit the BA-FG IRS as it's a POS, if you wanted to fit something more modern perhaps the AU IRS. |
