You'll pay heaps for new Queensland high-tech driver's licence
Steven Wardill From: The Courier-Mail May 12, 2010 10:26AM 163 comments QUEENSLAND'S high-tech new drivers' licences are almost here - but they'll cost twice as much as the current version within five years. Transport Minister Rachel Nolan today announced that the new licences would be trialled this year with a full rollout from 2011. The licence includes a biometric image of the driver as well as a computer chip capable of storing personal information. Its introduction will see the phasing out of the existing laminated driver and other licences. But motorists are in for a shock with the cost of licences increasing from the current $73.30 for a five-year licence to $96.05 initially - and then $152.50 in five years. What else will Captain Bligh slug us motorists with ???????

Five year license for $90-$150 bucks is pretty cheap in the scheme of things.
NSW has been around $150 for 5 years for ages. |

Geez, how cheap are Qld licenses now ?
As 'jeep_by_ford' said ours are that price now. ---From the RTA NSW site--- Unrestricted Driver licence (Gold) & National Heavy Vehicle Driver licence (Magenta) $47 for 1 year, $113 for 3 years, $151 for 5 years

damn i thought this was going to be about a license for high performance drivers.
might be a good point. would you pay a higher price for a license that increased your speed limit?

Certainly the price is a bit steep, but for many years there has been calls to get rid of the current laminated licences because of how incredibly simple it is to forge!
No other state in Australia uses laminated cards and i recall a comment made that a QLD drivers licence was presented as ID while in England and they laughed and said thats some sort of cheap fake!

We can pick a tampered licence once it is pulled apart it actually changes colour to a cloudy appearance and the QLD Govt embossing pulls apart when stretched you can see it under a normal torch light - get a QLD licence and look at it under a strong light on an angle you can see the QLD gov't signs (the egg and sperm symbol) QLD transport are stingy - the only place i know of that when you renew your licence they give you a sticker to put on the back with a new exp date

I changed mine from nsw to qld last august and i was like WTF when the chick handed it to me ... Plus you can even just post back the renewal saying you haven't changed much since the last renewal and they just post the sticker to go on the back , so you can go 10 years without stepping into a registry ... |

I agree!! But didn't have a choice if I wanted to go in, it was a museum IIRC and you had leave backpacks and ID at the cloakroom But they wouldn't accept the rubbish license was my point. I actually like the fact you can renew the license over the net and they send you a sticker, saves me waiting 1.5 hours at the QT office. That is the normal wait in my town. Not secure I know but certainly easier. |

Mrs Bligh must really to not want to be sitting another term. I'm yet to come across a supporter. What's wrong with ditching the laminated version and adopting a similar one to NSW? instead, we have to pay for a chip containing information which will no doubt get hacked and thus assisting in identity fraud. Morons.

We got new licenses here in Victoria, and every time I go to buy some beer I get questioned about if its a real license because of the stupid plastic strip it has, that no one has seen before.

New World Order here we come... why is there a need for an electronic RFID chip inside a drivers license? Is it to aid in the fast processing of check points (ala the nazi check points)? Perhaps we can purchase groceries with it?
I agree the QLD license looks like a library card (worse in fact), however, there is no need to have this level of big brother technology IMO

But hang on - there is no RFID chip in cash (that I am aware) - you would be hard pressed to photocopy it and pass it off as real money? Besides... RFID technology is simple to copy or clone... Demo: http://vodpod.com/watch/1026814-copy-an-rfid-chip

technology is free afaik... my bank updated my credit card to a chip readable unit for a total cost to me of $0.00...Something I use daily...
Why the f&^k it costs me an extra $30 clams for something that I have never been asked for or needed in 15 years is beyond me... For every update the Bligh government does they seem to tack on a healthy profit... So over it!

Can someone post a picture of the drivers license of their state?
I live in Victoria and I have this one: http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200909/r430352_2058830.jpg Except it says Probationary Drivers License, and instead of blue, its red there to signify stage 1 Ps. |

I enjoyed living in Queensland because it was different from the other states, i lived in Sydney for a few years earlier this decade and i couldn't wait to be out of there again. Now it's all much of a muchness :( except the warmer climate up here is still free...until they find a way to tax or toll the weather

Whilst it may be true that other states are paying this much for their licences already, it does not justify the cost.
A discussion on news radio yesterday said the biometric technology that is to be used is already in use for some RSL clubs. Their membership can be as low as $10 for 3 years, why should this cost be 1000% higher for the guvmnt to implement? In my business, volume = better buying power = less cost. Wouldn't be revenue raising, surely.
