Default BF MK11 SR 60000km or FG G6 125000km

Hi,

My family is currently looking for a replacement for our 1998 AU Falcon. (It won't be passing rego again without a lot of money spent).

We have found 2 Falcons that seem like good deals.

The first is a BF MK11 SR Falcon with just under 60,000kms. It is an early 2008 model and appears to be in great condition. It is for sale privately and has had 2 private owners. Ours for $14,000.

The second is a FG G6 2009 model with just under 125,000kms. We haven't looked at this one yet but it's photos look good. I don't know who has owned this one in the past. It does has a tow bar. It is for sale through a dealer. Ours for $14,000.

We have 2 small kids (4 & 5) so safety is important to us. We are not very car savvy and don't know what is the best way to go. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Have FG G6 models depreciated this much? $14k from a Dealer too, sounds very cheap for an 09 G6.
What sort of dealership is the G6 at, would you say they are reputable? If not I'd tread very carefully and have the car fully checked by someone you trust before you purchase, if you purchase it.

I'd own the G6 in a heartbeat if everything was fine.

Thank you for your reply. The FG is for sale through a Toyota Dealership. We negotiated the price over the phone because it is several hours distance from us and we plan to travel there in the morning to view it. I don't know why they don't want more for it. They told us it was listed for around $17,000 with little interest, they recently dropped the price, we then negotiated it further down to $14,000 and put a holding deposit on it.

If the BF has the 6spd I would go for it instead of the FG because its a year newer, yet it has more than double the km's on it, which doesn't mean its had a hard life but it has been used a lot more.

There's obviously more to a car than the driveline so check the G6 out and see if you like it. It's a newer car so it will probably be the best pick, and it would probably be worth more down the track if you ever look to upgrade. I would go for the G6, but of course its only my opinion and not yours (plus I haven't seen the cars you're talking about), so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Go which ever you prefer to drive and which looks like it has been looked after.

Just to clear up some myths about low vs high K cars ..................

Do not assume that a low K car that lives in the city has been used less than a higher K car that lives in the country.

Many higher K cars could have 1/2 of the use of a car with 1/2 the K's doing the local school and shopping runs. Country vs city .... business vs runaround

A lower K car with scheduled services might have had only a few services done ...... a higher K car could have been serviced more often and had a few more done. Once a year vs every 6 months or so. Seen a low mileage car that hadn't had a service done in 3 years because the mileage hadn't been hit. ( I am in the market for another car at the moment)

3 kids in the back being run around town for footy practice every Sunday vs some older couple living in the bush going to the city once week.

Some higher K company cars have very strict guidelines on servicing and repairs ...... many private buyers do not.

Really ..... just look at the overall car and look at the services done. I always look to see who owned it first. I don't mind buying ex company cars even if the cars have done a few more K's. At the moment I have an ex Telecom BA and an ex Hertz AU. Both still going strong and both bought because of the condition they were in and the services done on both!

Agreed. My brother has a BA XT wagon previously owned by Telstra and it has 302xxx on it and runs tight as my 140xxx old XR6 (also big on hwy km).

KM makes sales more attractive but it really depends on where they came from.

I'd go the G6 personally. I don't like the FG shape but it is a nicer car to be inside.

IMO the seats on the G6 don't look very nice (I think I found the one you're interested in on Carsales :P) but overall it looks like a nicer car.

khira, any chance you could go to the auctions and get one with a manufacturer's warranty for similar $$$?

As others have said, kilometres are not indicative of all that much... but 125,000 kays is a lot of mileage for a car that probably hasn't had it's third birthday yet... I'd go for the BF personally. Obviously it all depends on how they present and drive

FG Is a better all round package to the B series. $14,000 seems about 5000 short though. Take both for a drive I reckon. If both run well, the FG has it i think. 125000 isn't much, should do 250000 before you get into much drama.

it really depends on personal preferance. they're obviously both 6cyl, autos, so that must of been chosen by you, as these are the 2 options you have come up with. now, as for K's, i know of ex taxi's that drive like new, and i know ba's and bf's that are just absoululty ***** to drive. yet, i still haven't touched an FG. never had the opportunity to. either car you pick, you will still have to out lay money for when something goes wrong. and it also depends if you're going to be building it up into a nice family/daily or just going to leave it stock as a rock family car.

G6 will be cheap because it is out of manufacturer warranty. i would say toyota are having a hard time moving it because there are plenty more available all over australia and most people would probably be prepared to pay a bit more for a low km one with warranty.

disregarding km, as far as the cars are concerned, i wouldn't even think twice about it. FG all the way, no question!

i had a bf2 and was umming and ahhing about upgrading to fg. i'd only had the bf2 a bit over a year but liked the look of FG and no longer needed a wagon (bf2 was a wagon). the worst thing i did was eventually take one for a test drive. from then on it was only a matter of time....

the dash is much nicer (personal opinion), the cruise is magic (set it in 1 km/h incriments, holds speed down hills, tells you what speed its set at etc), gearbox will be better. even the 5sp is better than the old 4sp. personally i don't think there are many plusses in the bf2 favour. i always go for the newer model anyway and i've never been bothered by km. most niggling issues happen early in a cars life, so by 125000km, everything should be pretty much sorted.

FG for my vote.

Don't forget, the FG also has the higher ANCAP safety rating than the BF as well.

FG All day.

Yes, it has more KMs. but a well looked after Falc of any sort can do 500,000km so don't stress. Just check the service history, accident damage etc.

Only downside of an FG is it feels like a bigger car, than the BF despite the fact it's dimensionally almost the same.

My 08 BFII SR is getting to 100,000k's and has been very good. Only a set a tyres and servicing for the unit and it has been taken a few places that some would think it might be out of its depth. Its been a good car but it felt cheaper then my old BA I had.

As for the FG, its a much better car. They drive well, are better on fuel and safer. Even if the FG has twice the K's I would say it would still be better then the BFII.

FG. A much nicer drive and package than the B series. I own a BA XR6 and an FG XR6T and the BA (which is virtually the same as the BF interior wise) just feels old and dated, but i cant seem to let her go :(

The dealer should have the name/address of the previous owner. If their address is "remote" (or a business) I'd be happier the KM are fewer longer trips rather than many more shorter trips .. Which are typically worse for wear.

I live 35km from work (and our closest town) so most trips are at least 35km meaning our cars get good, long runs at higher speeds .. Not 5min 50km/h drives which means nothing gets time to warm up properly.
