Exclamation QLD Easter : 1 Km over Speed Limit Ticket!!!!!!

POLICE will stop traffic on the state's major highways and enforce "zero tolerance" on speeding in an unprecedented Easter road safety blitz.

Motorists speeding will face fines as frustrated police say they are sick and tired of the mounting road toll.

Police Minister Jack Dempsey said it would not be business as usual on the roads.

Extra police will be called in from other duties to take part in high-visibility and covert operations, targeting everything from defect cars and seatbelts to tired, inattentive and drunk motorists.

Tomorrow, every major road out of Brisbane will be stationed by police, with random breath tests and other stoppages among "action plans" implemented statewide.

Mr Dempsey and Police Commissioner Ian Stewart will today launch the Easter road safety campaign as the road toll stands at 70 - which is 15 more deaths than this time last year.

"The message is, if they are a kilometre over, they will get a ticket," Mr Dempsey said.

"It's not business as normal anymore, there are no apologies.

"This whole Easter campaign is zero tolerance with traffic infringements.

"There will be times that we will be shutting down certain highways at any given time," he said.

Frustrated police say they do not want a repeat of last year, when 12 people died over the Easter period.

State Traffic Support Branch acting Superintendent Paul Fogg said "every available resource" would be used during the two-week campaign.

My Comment : No car's speedo is 100% accurate..another example of the road toll being used to raise revenue.....

Thats correct, none are. All that Im aware of read high. So if you sit on the speed limit, you would never get a ticket, as you would always be going slower than the calibrated equipment of police.

My speedo turned out to be bang on, fined last week for 116 in 100 and thats exactly what the digital speedo said, I figured the radar would say 111 -113.

"Extra police will be called in from other duties to take part in high-visibility and covert operations, targeting everything from defect cars and seatbelts to tired, inattentive and drunk motorists".

Inattentive are the most dangerous yet I've never seen or heard of anyone being booked for this.

That is only true for vehicles manufactured since ADR was change from +/- 10% to +0%/- 10% a decade or so ago following pressure from Victoria.

Wow. Heavy handed tactics. If going faster than what a signs says is the maximum causes a massive number of road deaths, I assume they will prevent fire trucks, ambulances and the police themselves form exceeding that limit. That is only logical, otherwise they are putting us all in great danger with their reckless disregard for the limit and us the poor suffering citizens.....

Fines won't stick. Anything up to 12% over will be dissmised as usual, providing the recipients fight them.

Well that is the best action. Clog the courts with this stupidity. The Magistrates will sort it quickly as they are a bit more in tune with the community than the politically motivated despots and the wannabe gestapo that have infiltrated the ranks of our Police service.

I don't get this. Why won't the fines stick? Speeding is speeding whether it's 1k over or 10k over. What defence do you use in court?

Equipment accurracy. Do we know 100% that our speedo is spot on? Is the gun that the cop is using is it accurate? Was the person who did the last calibration do it correctly? There is to many varibles to make it possible to get a proper reading.

Are you really that battered and beaten that you believe that just because someone take a measurement on a device that it is 100% accurate?

The LIDARs are not fixed into a frame the are being manually held. It is impossible for a human being to stay perfectly still and the movement of 1km/h is not noticeable so if you are doing exactly 100 and the copper has a slight wind behind him or is a bit tired or whatever the LIDAR measures the difference between the speed you are going and the speed it is going. Assuming it is perfectly stationary is foolish and naive and under the law the copper will have to prove he was not moving at a rate that is imperceptible to the naked eye. Good luck with that.

Put this down to a silly minister making what amounts to a "sound bite" for the press...
More like a brain faart if you ask me...

a 1kph ticket would be laughed out of court.....and the police know it too.

Let's hope that this "can do do" minister pulls his head in and let the Police and QDOT look after this like they've done for years.

Our company corporate policy on speeding infringements has now changed, they are now regarded
as safety breaches in company vehicles and as such attract a written warning, we only get three in a 12 month period.

Agree with everything above.

If they are not using a tripod stand or the corrective shoulder harness there is no way they can maintain a steady hand to maintain an accurate reading especially at distances greater than 150m away regardless of device range capabilities, thats not factoring in wind speed, other cars and where the LIDAR is situated when recording allegeded offence/

I highly recommend everyone familiarise themselves with the Australian standards for LIDAR devices whether to know where you stand if you've allegedly commited an offence or even just food for thought for future reference.

Ref numbers are AS4691.1-2003 definitions & device requirements and AS4691.2-2003 Operation proceedures.

All available at your state libraries at no cost, knowledge is power.

Apologies for going off topic, just wanted to share this with everyone.

What so you contest every single speeding ticket you get and win? Surely it can't be that easy otherwise every ticket they write is invalid.

Sounds plausible what you say but does it hold up in court or are you flushing hundreds of dollars down the drain trying to prove it?

The best defense to use in court is the one where you never admit to the charge in the first place!!!!.
The first question you will be asked when pulled over is, "Why were you speeding?"
Any answer other than, "I wasn't speeding", means you have admitted to the offence and done 90+% of the Officers work if you decide to contest it.

Ah yes, the old "zero tolerance" chestnut. Will do wonders for the already less than ideal public perception of the Highway Patrol boys.

One of the worst things about driving back in Australia after Central Europe is that, over there, there is no worry about discretion to exceed the highway speed limit to complete a maneouvre like overtaking safely - spending as little time on the wrong side of the road and getting well clear of the vehicle you've just passed. Common sense approach.

Here, you're watching the speedo constantly because of the radars, very stressful and distracting from safe, attentive driving. Really the opposite of road safety. I hate it with a vengeance.

It took until post 13 for the simpletons to come out to play

So you have never gone 1km/h over the limit I take it?

Yes all the time. But 2 things, I don't speed where there is a high chance of being caught (ie double demerit times, known hot spots etc), and I don't speed if unsafe.

Haven't been done for speeding ever. If I ever do get caught, so be it, I was speeding.

So whose the simpleton, me, or the morons who get caught speeding during double demerit periods.

Agree
Me, 3 years since a speeding fine and im no angel either admittingly.

However, double demerits, idiots on the roads this time of year, just makes sense to slow down IMHO

Rather get to my location safely then stupidily or to be a statistic

Yes, indeed. They (the authorities) have warned the public. If you get caught now, then there is no point complaining about it. Drive beneath the limit, and you won't get fined.

Whether it's a smart or actual life-saving move is another point altogether.

theoretically your comment is correct but if there is zero tolerance instead of some latitude drivers will be watching the speedo more than the road so they don't drift 1 K extra. hardly a safe option. will cause more accidents than it prevents

And the other problem is that a lot of people in new car unaware that their speedo can be reading fast will begin driving
much slower than the posted speed limit. While this might not seem a problem, it can be very off putting to anticipation,
general flow of traffic and actually start causing more frustration as other drivers begin switching lanes and even
more aggressive moves..

Unfortunately, the police don't have a gun that measures excessive stupidity but I can imagine what bullets it should have..

Exactly. Why don't we all just keep our eyes on the speedo going downhills and forget about situational awareness. Actually knowing and seeing where you are going is overrated. Better to hit a tree or another car at exactly or just below the speed limit. What could go wrong?
