Hey all,
I've been asking a few people on what they think about the Mazda MX5. Fantastic buying as a used vehicle for a while now.

You need a depends in the poll, soft top is girls car whilst the hard top is not, a well set up MX 5 can be a fun little trackday car, the light weight RWD platform has a lot of things going for it, even in standard form they are a quick little car on tighter circuits.
My mates fairly standard one can do constant 1.11 around Wakefield park in supersprints, the suspension has been tweeked and it is running on semis but the thing is only putting out around 100 kwatw . If you set one up well with some suspension mods and good (read: correct size for performance) rims and tyres you can get a fun car that punches well above its weight. If I had more of a budget for my next toy a MX 5 would be high on the list. Low cost, easy on tyres and brakes, parts readily available, its a winning package. And if you want more power a turbo conversion can be purchased of the shelf or if your that way inclined a 13B or 20B. As for a daily the limiting factor would be that it only a 2 seater. Have a look on www.my105.com.au for some inspiration. Finally the older ones are the one to get, the newer ones are much heavier and not as well balanced Last edited by MLR; 26-06-2013 at 04:24 PM. |

There was a hard top, only released to the JDM market in 2003, I was meaning with the removable hard top though as a JDM hard top is as rare as hens teeth.

You can't drive one and say thats a girls car....though on the surface it may seem that way. Too much fun!

Depends why you bought one.
The answer will dictate if you pee standing up or sitting down.

Don't know if its a girl s car or not, but I thought about getting one because its a cheap reliable run about with conventional layout which I like.

Looking at some of the price around ... it's a tempting buy.
Although ... first thing would be coilovers and swaybars on them ... lightweight rims and sticky tyres ... and if it can handle it ... a snail underbonnet.

I went out with a blonde who drove one - she looked great in it.
I drove it to the shops once, got laughed at and was asked what my husband drove. Would never drive it again.

Yes it is a girls car, or for men who bat for the other team.

Such a shame about the stereotype on them, they are a little ripper of a car. I personally dont think they are specifically a girls car, come decent rims, lowered, decent exhaust and a roll bar and they look tough, as well as leave a lot of cars for dead around a mountain road. Shame most people only see the 'chick' part of it: bit underpowered, easy to drive.
Question should be, are you comfortable enough with your sexuality to own one?

I do believe the MX-5/Miata is rather feminine.
But I know an old grandfather who has always liked them and now owns one. So I wouldn't slam a male MX-5 owner for being homosexual. |

LOL...make it a coupe, put a ford badge on it, call it an escort and it suddenly ok?
They are good, sure some of them look a bit soft but some nice rims and stance and I think they are good. Better than driving a corrolla for a daily thats for sure. And the best point... RWD FTW! Quote:

Id like to own a turbo one with some handling mods, not much would get near you on the bends.
But to answer the Q, they are 'seen' as a girls car, but who cares! Plenty of blokes drive little butterbox hatches that, lets be honest more chicks drive but they dont get a 'girls car' tag. |

They might be a well balanced and reasonably built car, however, I put them in the same category as the S2000 and Porsche Boxter. A car that if you took a mate for a ride and everyone who sees you automatically thinks that you are a couple, just doesn’t float my boat.

I've noticed the thing that anyone who regards the MX5 as a girls/hairdressers car or whatever has in common, is that they know very little about cars.

So what do I need to know about mx5's so I can broaden my knowledge of cars. I didn't realise that if my opinion of a perticular vehicle was not the same as someone else that my knowledge suddenly deminished.

Now there could be many reasons why one doesn't like them - you might not like the way they look, you might just not like Mazda's. That's fine, that's your opinion. But to disregard one as a 'girls car' merely reveals an opinion based not on knowledge or facts, but ignorance. See Flappists post above for an excellent summation of why someone might come to such an opinion. |

The picture of the two Mazda above are not bad looking cars if any mx5's came like that here (haven't seen any so either they did not make it here like that or are only a limited number) The question is not whether they handle or if they are a true sports car, or even if someone is ignorant or not, but if the Mazda mx5 is a girls car or not? We, well I mean I live here in australia (can't speak for everyone) this is an australian forum so I can only assume that we are talking bout the australian version mx5. Those cars are very plain to look at and don't have much power either. The australian version would have to be aimed at the female market they have that feminine look. Heck they even loosely look like a wide bodied convertible 121 bubble car from the 90,s my ex loved the 121 and to give credit for a car that on a track I think would give the mx5 a run for its money for handling and power to weight!

In my last comment, I wasn't hating on MX-5s or insisting they are only for females. If a man likes them and owns one then good on him. Many men drive hatches these days, while they aren't stereotypically masculine, they would be silly to own anything else for what they need them for.
