Just the Facts:

*The 2014 Chevrolet SS dealer-allocation plan will be limited, Edmunds has learned.
*Chevrolet has about 3,000 dealers in the U.S. and fewer than 1,000 cars are expected to arrive on the first boatload from Australia later this year.
*The Chevrolet SS is the brand's first V8 rear-wheel-drive performance sedan since 1996.

MONTEREY, California — Enthusiasts hoping to test-drive the high-performance 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan may have a difficult time finding the car when sales begin in December.

Chevrolet has about 3,000 dealers in the U.S. and fewer than 1,000 cars are expected to arrive on the first boatload from Australia late this year. The 2014 Chevrolet SS is the spiritual successor to the legendary 1994-'96 Impala SS, a Corvette-powered, rear-drive sedan.

"It will probably be around 900," Chevrolet's John Fitzpatrick told Edmunds.

Chevrolet SS allocation will based on each dealer's Corvette and Camaro sales.

"If you have a niche selling those cars, you are going to get a bigger percentage than somebody who doesn't sell Camaros and Corvettes," he said.

Edmunds says: Consumers who want to kick the tires of the highly anticipated Chevy SS may have to organize a search party.

It doesn't seem like they're expecting huge demand for it, particularly at $45k in their market, it's certainly not cheap. Less money gets you into a 335i sedan and it's only ~6k shy of a Corvette. So it's no performance bargain.

If they wanted it to fail I doubt they would have approved the export program in the first place. GM have said from day one that it will be a low volume flagship sedan.

When Ford are conservative with inventory levels they are smart, but when GM do it, it equals failure!! Go figure. It is also only the first shipment.

I don’t know why people (even us Fords fans) are so keen to see a greet Australian export product fail. As an Australian, this puzzles me. When you are walking the streets of New York & you see an Australian engineered & built Holden Commodore driving around, it makes you feel great to be an Australian!!

They only have to sell 7-10K (which is small numbers for the US market) for it to be a great program for Australia. That would be more than Commodore Ute sales & a much higher price point than Utes too!

What r u talking about....7-10k. They'll be lucky to get 5000 imported so how they gunna sell a car thats not even in a third of the showrooms over there.
And don't compare gm to ford aus.....we limited the stocks for a good reason....we're in a tiny struggling restricted market........they have no excuses ....they have piles of bail out money to fund their ventures.

Saw a red left hand drive SS at the big slide playcentre today in ferntree gully, the back is very plain front a bit fussy, overall I think it will date quickly.

They might be sending only 5K in year one (the might not be, some here are saying much less), but the deal is longer than just 1 year. Look at the cop car thing, which had a very very slow start, but it doing good numbers now (by Australia production levels, but still very small at US levels). I think there is hope of getting to 7K-ish per year in future years.

Also, if inventory control is good management for a tiny struggling market, it is even MORE important for a bigger market that has the potential to create bigger financial damage!! Good company policies are good no matter what the size of the business!!

I cant see any issue in the Article. Holden have said they are only going to be sending circa 5000 a year of them to the US. To do this, they are going to break up the manufacturing thru out the year. 900 will head over soon, ready for sale in December, and 2 months or so later, another 900 will go the same way etc etc. Logistically, it must be quite difficult for Holden to get cars from Port Adelaide to "all over the US". They cant make 4000 export cars straight up to fill a transport ship (they will screw up local supply, and have cars sitting in the US for quite a while).

Not sure how they do it, but surely they must load up a ship that comes down from Asia, which then heads back to asia, picks up some more asian cars, and then takes the whole lot to the US.

That is an initial shipment. It's not 1000 for the whole of 2014.

I'm surprised GM don't want thousands of them sitting around dealerships not selling, they do it with every other thing they build. They have over 750,000 unsold vehicles filing dealer lots in the US.

The obviously learnt nothing from their bankruptcy.

We're just wettin the yanks platter for large rear wheel drive cars. They will be build'n em from late 2015 onwards. New platform for the next gen chev SS in sedan, wagon & uterus. Wait & see Mark Rueis ex Holden Gm now Gm Gm is a big liker of the large 4 door performance car

From the August sales conference call , Ford has inventory at 535,000

171,00 cars
232,000 trucks
132,000 utilities

that's 65 days supply

There's no huge stockpiles of Falcon or Territory anywhere but there's obviously no need to build cars for another two weeks.

We could see the perculiar situation where novated buyers come back into the market and there's insufficient vehicles.
We might see a funny case where both manufacturers have to work some overtime to get stock to dealerships before Christmas.

The plan to sell these in the US has fail written all over it, didn't they learn the first 2 times.

Only plan on selling maybe 1700-2000 a year.

I have been a harsh critic of Holden/GM from day dot on here, because i'm not stupid enough to believe the constant spin, rubbish and smoke and mirrors they serve up. I'm sure those tatics works on bottom feeders like you who believe they are a roaring success story like they would have you believe, but the reality is quite different and they are on a knifes edge.
