A friend has just had his restoration project dipped by a business in outer east Melbourne , business has changed hands and previous dipper did a good job. This time around the current proprietor claimed he could do all the car but when the job came back it was very obvious that the top 40 mm had been above the top of the dipping medium ( a plimsoll line very apparent inside the roof and original paint still on the top and other places ) and also about 90% of the proofcoat under the car was still there ( previous business had done all the proofcoat ). The dipper still wanted all his money and to avoid court issues friend paid to be able to get his car back. Now he is looking for a recommendation as to either a blaster or dipper to get the job done properly. We believe there is a business in Adelaide that dips ( OK ? ) or a blaster with good results in Melbourne ?

I'm having my XR dipped at a place called Recoat in Albury. They were recommended by my panel beater.
I've seen the results of cars that have come back from there and they look amazing- totally bare metal with a protective coating applied. Stu

Thanks Stu , Recoat is one he had considered originally on my recommendation but the truthful fellow who did the job told him that Recoat was out of business ! ( he said - gone bankrupt ) Definitely a good job at Recoat , I have seen their work .

I haven't dealt with them personally.
My panel beater deals with them directly and he dropped my XR there to be chemically dipped a couple of months ago and it's "in the queue" waiting. I'm sure he would've told me if they were no longer in business! I'd just give them a call directly as GasOLane says. Stu

Guys in Adelaide are called Minus Paint at Wingfield.
Haven't used them, but know people who have, and were pleased. Removes everything......! Seam sealer, sound deadener, wiring !

Thanks Bear , just the info we wanted. Adelaide dipper has a good website and appears to do exactly what the previous dipper at Melbourne south east did and what the current proprietor can't get right. My friend has now manually stripped a small part of the proofcoat ( has filled a 3 litre container of proofcoat ) and the unstripped roof.

Had my Chevy and many parts blasted in Ballarat. The guy does heaps of tri fives for a local builder and goes well. Just won't do centre of roof or bonnet if he deems it unsafe. Don't know why people dip unless its a 500k resto.

For a $10,000. resto you are sure that the inside of the box sections that are not treated by blasting will not rust through in the first year after the resto.! A good dip job and plenty of primer into joints and seam sealer followed by copious quantities of cavity wax into the access holes you drill before the dip gives some certainty about the length of time before rust starts poking through. You need to drill the access holes before the dip to get rid of the swarf ? ( metal filings from the drilling ) which could be a problem rust wise if it stays there. Soda blast is reported to be a problem if the soda remnants remain in the crevices.
