Default NSW Highway patrol BMW’s

Quick question,

I was at Kloster BMW dropping my X5m off for some warranty work, and saw a NSW Bmw Highway car in the back yard. Spoke to the service manager about what engine they had in them and he said they have the 2.0 litre diesel turbo. Really??? I think he is wrong can anyone clarify please!!!!

Pretty big problems if the service manager doesn't know what sort of engine is in a car

I was under the impression they were all 530d's.
They might be switching to 520d's with the way the economy is going.

They are a technically brilliant, i mean, the HD screens i've seen inside of them are better than whats hanging on my wall.
It identified a number plate and showed the officer information in real time.
Very Cool!!

Yep you'd be right!

It's unknown whether the police-spec versions get any engine modifications, though the consumer version's 5.7-seconds 0-100km/h is already brisk.

Highway Patrol have a single turbo 3 litre 6 diesel engine. All are 530d.

Standard engine and m sport brakes.

195kw, 620nm. Gives quite a kick and will spin 1st, and chirp 2nd, and 3rd in m sport mode on manual shift using paddles.

Fun car to drive...

I should know, I own one.

All that bottom end torque makes it more punchy around town than the mustang. Being a diesel it runs out of revs too soon. But anyway, that's not what I bought it for. Its a great daily drive

That’s what I thought. It definitely had 4 piston from brake calipers. Painted blue, probably Brembos

Last I heard these were nearly $200k on the road with all their equipment.

Surely a V6 Camry would have made alot more economic sense.

Especially since thy're not allowed to engage in "high Speed Pursuits" anymore.. (In the Interests of Public safety)...

One of Our local HWP vehicles is a 200 series LC..

How can they possibly be the same cost when the initial cost is probably double and then resale value a lower percentage,Don’t believe everything a cop tells you.The cop on the street wouldn’t have a clue or care and those that do the purchasing will tell whatever lies it takes to justify their jobs

Back in 2000 my dad paid a premium on the benz ml320 he ordered to delete options. So no leather seats, no sunroof. Pretty much payed extra for a bare bones car. It took 6 months to be delivered. You pay more for less. The ML was used as a tow car and a general get things done car, so it wasnt treated well. But german cars, you can get them in basic spec. Im assuming bmw does the same, charging more for less.

Tassie pretty cruisy I guess (I don't know)

I did see a stripey car (might well have been a Liberty) briefly a few weeks ago here on the east coast of Tassie where I live that was more high viz than Tasmanian cop cars used to be but I can't remember definitely that it was. Makes sense though . In our neck of the woods ours are pretty much all four wheel drives like Pajeros , Rangers etc

Found this though while looking for more detail and this was from a year ago .Mostly around Hobart and Launceston and North West Coast where most of the people are I guess .

Yep mate the fully striped ones (red and blue usually) with the gun on top etc are Liberties.

Interesting article. Thanks

There is at least one unmarked bike who is always grabbing cars and bikes. It's black with no markings - Tiger model

I guess they'll have a really quiet Easter weekend next week or will they ???

Maybe with the travel restrictions that'll devastate places like the Tasman Peninsula , St Helens , Coles Bay , Swansea , Bicheno and similar they'll be a bit fussy about the travel restrictions.. Not too sure either way.

I got done for no seat belt by a bike cop many moons ago . I stupidly moved my car from the the Post Office to the take away maybe 60 metres without the belt on and he noticed..From memory a couple of demerit points and $80 ...He was just cruising through too . Not a local .

Yeah I don't know to be honest mate. I guess will be quiet period but roads still need to be patrolled (especially with bottle shops open) so yep i honestly don't know.

It's beautiful up your way. Best driving roads too even being sensible.

Ha...yeah ok. I got a seatbelt fine a few years back as i literally couldn't see a thing out back of Maloo with belt on.....so I always reversed with it off then clipped it before entering road.

Still done and 300 or so fine and points........harsh i reckon but again, life could be worse : )

Was listening to the Toby Hagen motor session on ABC's Nightline. He was discussing the NSW Police car purchases and noted they spend a lot more than other states on each HWP cars. He was shocked that NSW police (water police) had recently purchased a Ram 1500 to tow jet skis when a Ranger or Hilux costing half that could do the job. Allegedly they justified the purchase claiming they needed a 4.5 tonne capacity. He also noted that the fuel use of the petrol V8 would be a lot more expensive than the diesels in the other utes.

After moving from QLD to NSW I have noticed the HWP like to roll a class above, 5 series and 300C's if you dont mind.

They also lack alot of signage on the front which is cheeky, not that I need to worry.....

Most of the time car like the RAM above are leased or sold at a decent rate as its marketing for RAM, if its only one they are not making big $$ out of it but they get alot of air play like this post.

I think you could start arguing in Australia why do you need RWD. Most mid sized cars or SUV's would smoke HWP cars of 10 years ago so so who are they keeping up with?

Had a chat with a HWP officer in Moree a few months back. (We were both checking out of a motel and his 530d was idling outside).
He said the new BMW's are a notch above the outgoing SS and XR6, probably due to it being a newer platform. His only real gripe was the BMW's windscreen costing $2k a pop to replace.
He said if you could put the engine and gearbox from an XR into an SS, it'd be the ultimate patrol car...
