Up to 10kms over the speed limit the fine is $287 ! More than double the other States.

I wonder how many people here actually get done for under 10. If you haven't had a ticket for 2 years, you can apply for the "review", which is pretty much automatic to have the fine waived :P

Speeding infringements (fixed and mobile cameras)

Exceed speed by less than 10km/h

Q2 (Oct - Dec) 2022-23 - 244,304
https://www.vic.gov.au/statistics-quarter-2-2022-23

There you go, 200,000+ people

As far as I go, I've never had a speed camera fine in 13 years on the road, nor a 'traffic offence' for that matter

Well technically its 12 years on the road with 13 months being told to sit in the corner

I wonder if that under 10 thing would work for me because i've never had any demerit points.

Why are Australian cops so strict on speed?

There’s moremoney in fines to potentially be made from low level speeding
before loss of license:
- $287 + 1 demerit points x 12 possible fine opportunities in 3 years
- $431 + 3 demerit points x 4 possible fine opportunities in 3 years
- $646 + 4 demerit points x 3 possible fine opportunities in 3 years

Best to milk the cash cows without taking their licenses…..Or is that too obvious……

In QLD 6k over you will generally still be ok, 7 over is a nono.

There are cases on the news of people being fined 2km over. But they challenged it in court and the fines cancelled. A waste of Police time. Police need to be clear on what the limit etc is.

I reckon the mobile speed cameras that are stacked at the back of contractor's cars have a decent buffer. Went past one 6 over a few months ago and never got a ticket.

I think the ones mounted on HWP and handheld lasers have a 2kmh margin of error. Same as the red light / speed cameras mounted on intersections. The infringement notices will have an "detected" and "alleged" speed. Alleged will be lower.

sure, but I think the question was around what limits the police should prosecute for. In the UK there are very clear guidelines from ACPO about this. As long as Australia has a zero tolerance policy, then you are correct, but if they continue to police low level speeding to this extent, is it any wonder that people believe it's about revenue, not road safety?

It is revenue, but it's completely voluntary.

It isn't difficult to control the speed of your vehicle. I know I sound like an old fart, but I contributed plenty when I was younger and spent half a year on a bus as well, so I was pretty slow to learn too.

Speeders, and pretty much all impatient road users, are just poor at maths. It's that simple. Running that red light (orange is red), tailgating, speeding etc are all signs that the driver thinks they're being held up, or trying to make up time.

The fact is, if they were good at maths, they'd soon quickly realise that any time they were gaining could be counted in seconds. Rarely in minutes. Never in hours.

My money is for me.

so let's get this straight - a 20 year message that speed kills, only 5% of those fined were in the 'significant speed' range, and yet we are in the middle of the highest road toll for years? maybe, just maybe, it's not speed that's the problem?

To be fair, the speedo would have been showing close to 70. Sure, it might be revenue raising, but it is voluntary.

True...thats what I tell them.
It is the lowest reading I have seen, due the reshuffling of brackets etc recently.

But when you get pinged for this and they cant/wont stop the juvenile car theives that the drivers are dodging daily, you wonder where the govts priorities are.

Hence the trains and Olympics comments.

Our QLD Premier is a total moron ! and even the village idiot can see that now !
You see it blowing total disregard for such brats who are way out of control, but you are over 1 KM/H well that's a huge deal to be taken so seriously.

I would be saying as for brats that number one, the police will polish their boots on a lot of brats tails directly ! That's what happened in my day as a child and you knew it and got the message.

I have brats getting about here driving like total morons, no reg'o loud as trying to be morons ! riding bikes loud as flat out, wheel standing no helmet on ! they do not care as the Law is nothing to them. i think it's kids on ICE and such rubbish, their brains are fried !

The Governments have created all such in fact.

You were warned by the police first and then they kept an eye on you.
A mate coped it with turtle pecks on the head. and another got the phone book wrapped over his head !
They had ways back then, because they were responsible for their patch being kept clean, or above them would be looking polishing their boots on their tail.

I believe the Bris - G Coast Highway should be 120 KM/H in the far right lane and so Australian idiots get used to like in Europe that the faster you go, you sit in the right hand lane and the slower you go you move to the left, that way no one overtakes on the left for crying out loud !
Such will make the highway not clog up so much. keep in your correct lanes !

It's not all about exceeding the posted limit but not being a goose is more important than anything.

Download Waze and use it. Great way to make sure you don’t inadvertently add to the revenue.
I know this will make some AFF users who don’t understand technology angry. Like that guy from last time I mentioned Waze. Old mate was furious about the scenario he made up in this own head because he didn’t understand it.

I use ye olde GPS on the windscreen job, has the fixed camera warnings and also sometimes the mobile camera warnings too if someone reports it.

Waze seems to work a treat as a lot of people use it and report things.

That’s it. I’ve had camera notifications before and see the speed camera car still setting up. A lot of active users makes sure it’s pretty much always up to date. Not only for speed cameras but hazards on road, stopped vehicles, heavy traffic, road work and all the other things you can report

The real cool story is the one you made up in your head. I appreciate you giving me a role, just don’t try to brand it as non fiction.

I wasn’t going to mention any names, but you volunteered.
