Talking to my nephew he asked if I had a spare drivers side mirror ...... Story goes he was at Knox City car park last week next to Ozone. Was only there for an hour and on his return noticed that some one had broken into his BA XT and had stolen his side mirror! They had done such a nice job that they had unscrewed the door panel, removed the side mirror and left all the pieces in tact so he could put it back again. Must say that was very nice of them and obviously had taken the time not to damage anything.
Don't know how long it takes to remove a side mirror but being a very busy car park, amazing that these people have the balls to do this, obviously replacing something on their BA and too tight to go and buy one. Less than an hour on a Friday night ........ nothing else in the car was touched including the Ipod, sunglasses etc. Must thank them for that. Very brazen must say.

Similar thing happened to Fairmont99 in his old Skyline. Except they popped the mirror out of the casing with a screwdriver.
But really, how low is that, when they could have gone to any wrecker, (FTG Auto Salvage are close by), and aquired one legally.

Driver side or passenger side mirror? I've got a few spares lying around waiting to be put in the bin after converting the BA to dual climate control.

How much are they worth?
A friend had her spare tyre plus cover stolen off her Rav4. She hung up on the stealer after learning of the factory replacement cost so she bought one off ebay for 1/3rd the price. When she went to collect it, according to her the guy had a whole line along his garage wall of various 'spare wheels'....... Be thankful nothing else was stolen as you say. Had my house broken into a month back and the idiots walked straight over $1000 cash in 2 plain white envelopes under my bedroom door. Never actually ended up stealing anything off me, as I had moved out 2 months prior, my house mates didn't fair all then good however :( |

i knew a lady on the sunshine coast that came out from work and was putting her gear in the back seat of her lancer when she noticed that the LHS rear window was missing. someone had carefully removed it without any sign of other damage to the car.

We had one of the payroll staff at our office have the headlights stolen out of her 99 Mirage during office hours, from an open carpark in broad daylight.
Broke in, popped the bonnet, left retaining nuts on the ground. Makes you wonder what goes through their heads when they evaluate possibel criminal convictions, or a dose of "street retribution", versus a couple of hundred bucks at the wreckers......I know some people are doing it tough, but

Just out of curiosity, what colour was the mirror? perhaps they wanted a specific colour too.
Not only did they want to save on a mirror but also save on painting it?? |

More often than not with insurance companies really screwing panel beaters hard, the more unscrupulous operators are resorting to stealing parts and invoicing them to the insurance company. This is evidenced by the obscure lists of thefts, as well as the ability of the thief to steal the part without so much as breaking anything. I personally know of atleast four people who had done this and were caught, back in 2001. With tougher times than then, I can only imagine it has increased. Was prevalent within certain demographics as far as my experiences with it went.

Dave I think I may have a mirror with a tiny crack in the bottom of the plastic(it's nearly invisible) sitting in my room. Yours if I can find it!

Our sales manager had the front bumper stolen off his EA Ghia in a shopping centre carpark when they were new ('88).
We also had a trans stolen from a new EB that was up on display ramps out the front of the dealership. Have heard of similar things happening on the train to WA with new cars. |

Well if repairer needs a parts, they usally just take the whole car with a tow truck.
The most weirdest thing I have heard being stolen. It was not on a car, but somone jumped a back fence into a back yard and stole 3 springs off a trampoline. (one of those news ones with the full net. |

My uncle had one wheel stolen of his crappy old subaru brumby at a shopping centre a few years ago. We walked up to it and could see it was on a bit of a lean. He said "sh't, I must have a flat", walked around the other side and his wheel was gone. He stood there scratching his head and I nearly wet myself laughing.

Complete side mirror assemblies for BAs are worth very little. $15-20 a side second hand and genuine.
As far as colour is concerned that a poster mentioned above, you can remove the scalp without removing the mirror assembly.

One of my first cars when I was a Teenager was a tidy(ish) HZ Statesman.
Sometime in the past a previous owner had swapped the front end over to HZ GTS (Guards, nose, bonnet, bumpers, lights, grille, the lot). I came out of school one day (07/03/97 GF's B'Day) and someone had pinched the lot. Right out the front of the biggest high school in town, on a main road. Drove round for a week without a front end on it. |

Tumeke, that would look jacked. Officer: "what happened to your car?" Tumeke: "someone stole my front end!"
The OP sounds like it was 'stolen to order'. Quote:

I have heard rumors of people in europe breaking into cars popping bonnets and pinching parts from under the hood, then the owner comes along and their cars' buggered, this is why the focuses have a lock behind the badge, to stop nuftys stealing underbonnet parts god I hope that doesn't catch on here..
