Well I have been given the ok from the mrs to upgrade the car as the Subaru currently isnt up to the task for me powerwise and room wise.
Dont get me wrong, the subby has been the best for reliability that I have ever owned, but sadly Im finding its too gutless in the lower rev range for my driving, plus doesnt have the room I need to carry 5 with some form of comfort. The one thing it was good for was the fact that it was a wagon and I could carry my father inlaws 100kg electric wheel chair in the back. So the quest for a replacement remains, which car to choose from? The cars in question are the BA xr6 turbo or BA fairmont Ghia. Now I have had a fixation for the xr6 turbo for quite some time but the mrs hates the thought of me getting a turbo. Go figure! :P But she has expressed to me that I could get one at her dissaproval. :P So I was thinking, to be a careing husband what if it was worth me settling for a BA Ghia in lieu of the turbs? I know the majority of the male members here would vote for the turbo, but would the ghia be that bad? EDIT: BTW I will be looking at 03-04 models. Cant afford brand spankers. :(

I traded the AU Ghia in for a BA Xr6.....no turbo though......and want my AU back! More so for the creature comforts with the leather climate control etc.....
If I had the choice of a turbo, I would defiantley have to have the higher spec pac with all the goodies in it. Then you couldnt go past the turbo. Standard xr6T pac vs Ghia? Would be swaying towards the Ghia. The new ones look **** hot. Oh the choices! | [/url] |

XR6 will have a better resale going forwards - especially the Turbos - should be popular youth car in a few years.
Looking at the 03 models quickly - Fairmont Ghia costs about 51500 - price range now is 15,100 to 22,000. XR6T - costs about 46000 - price range is now 17100-24600 |

Go the Ghia mate. You can always power it up a little bit with a reflash and some other tweaks. Besides, it'll make the missus happy. :P

If you are going to do afew mods to it, the turbo boost will scare your wife more than the smoother power band of the V8. Plus, the Ghia V8 will have less power standard, cheaper insurance too, you can tell her that...

3V Ghia all the way. You will get the low down power that you want as there is plenty of torque : and plenty of luxury!

Oh I did forget to mention, that I want to keep it all standard. There will be no mods whatsoever. Thats was one of the agreements to get the turbo or ghia in the first place.

Are you actually planning on the v8 ghia (as opposed to the 6) or is that just where this thread has sidetracked to?

Id get the XR6T and I would mod the ***** out of it. But thats just me, Shav. You know that I wouldnt care what anyone said I could or could not do and I would just get what I liked as long as it was reasonably sensible, I couldnt give a stuff what my other half said!!! Depends who is paying for it I guess...
There is no negotiating when it comes to cars! And Im the female in our family!!! Go the Turbo though, better resale, more to work with (if you decide later...) but it is a matter of personal taste. Sports and performance v luxo barge? Some people like their Fairmonts, some like their sports versions... Shav, if you find a 3v V8 Ghia in a colour she likes, you may have a chance??? Tell her its slower than an XR6T and harder to mod, and youre in!!! Haha. Merry Christmas mate! Jac

Cheers for the reply guys.
This thread is heading down the V8 Ghia path. While Id like to get another V8, the mrs isnt keen. I know some of you are bagging me for letting my mrs decide what car to buy, but in my relationship I view her opinion just as high and I want it to be a decision that we can mutually agree on. The turbo is very tempting, and Im leaning more towards that, but at the same time, I dont plan on doing any mods to it what so ever. I mean that this time. :P I dont plan to race it, drive it hard unecesarily or become a hoon. (no offence to anyone here who owns one) So Im weighing up the reasons if it a good move. The ghia however, with the lower buying price has allowed me to look at getting some aftermarket rims and tint. More of the laid back pimp spec look rather. Grandpa-ish I know, but it wont have the go the 6t has. Will it be better than the subby 2L? Maybe thats a dumb question.

Depends if you want more luxury than performance. For the best of both worlds, if you can find an XR6T with the luxury pack, I would go for this as first preference. Then Ghia V8 if you dont mind the additional fuel costs.
My Ghia I6 is adequate for me, and is reasonably fuel efficient also. |

Forester XT. 0-100 in 6.0s, and practical as hell for carrying stuff. Cheap to insure, and VERY reliable. No unwanted attention. Oh, and you can take it for some dirt road hooliganism too, which you wouldn't do in any Ghia or XR6T!

blueoval, Sounds like the decision is a Ghia given your mentioned criteria's by the boss. A few tips, get a MKII whatever you do, its just more piece of mind with reliability (as you know what Falcons are like, you need to give them a few years to sort out some design issues). Another thing thats in favour buying a Ghia is that you can pick them up alot cheaper than an XR6-T. They would be one of the most poor resale Falcon model out so buying 2nd hand is definitly wise. Even if you could afford it buying new would not be wise. Ofcourse if you ask me personally I am biased, take the fuel scare jitters, main stream thinking that a V8 will kill of the african beatle and melt the polar ice caps, theres no better time to buy a proper, pucker, weighty, grunty and impossibly good looking.... MKII XR8. :

XR6T, No question! However........you WILL want to mod it after 6 months when you are used to the power and its not "all" that quick anymore...
