nitrogen does not contain the moisture and other contaminants found in compressed air so, as you drive and the tires heat up, nitrogen filled tires will fluctuate less in temperature and pressure than air filled tires while driving. The bottom line is, you will still see pressure changes with nitrogen but, overall, your tires will run cooler and at a more consistent pressure than if they were filled with air.AS per Irish2s comments,Cheers Geoff.

30 psi used to be standard pressure. The Datsun I used to have a placard specifying that. Nowadays, 40 psi seems to be the most desired on car tyres regardless if they're low profile or not.

Approximately 40psi should be fine. I know the marking on the sidewall says 50 or thereabouts, but that would make your ride extra lumpy.

38 for me in the BF Ghia...used the same in my previous car, EL XR6. I don't mind having a bit firmer ride for better economy, as long as tyre wear is fine.

So effectivly FPV are saying 45 p.s.i. for performance driving and their 38 recommendation or in your case with different rears 38/42 is a general purpose all round setting, I presume for either more ride comfort or more even wear across the tyre or maybe both ?

45 psi. No less.. These are a big heavy car. Anyone running less on a FPV with the stock dunlops, you'll be changing them every 15,000ks. Those running 35-38 have a check of the tyre wear.. Plenty left in the middle of the tyre and buggerall each edge.. A sign of an under-inflated tyre.

Earlier today i checked all my tires & they all were at 37 psi not the desired 40 psi, so i put more air to 40 psi, immediately i noticed the difference! I just didnt know 3 psi a small amount can could make such a differance. Im amazed!

Race car drivers can feel a change of .5 of pressure, steering response changes

I can totally relate to what you're saying mate. Struggled a lot this winter with a long flu that stayed like my unwelcome mother in law and couldn't get rid of it and so forgot to check tyre pressure for ages.

I gradually got less happy with my cars handling and when I checked the pressure had fallen to 36 p.s.i.. When i pumped them up to 40 the other day I too was really amazed at how the sharpness of the handling improved, better turn-in and held a line in sweeping corners much better.

Check and inflate half way and at the end of every month for me from now on.
I think I might try 42 or even a bit higher after reading people's feedback on this thread although there seems like a lot of love for 40 p.s.i. from the poll so maybe that's the best performance / handling / some ride comfort compromise...

Interesting read;

I haven't paid too much attention to tyre pressures. Having said that, I do check them weekly.

Can anyone confirm if running 32 psi is correct for an AU with 205/65 15's ? (Falcon sedan with standard suspension)

Never thought to question it until now..

I thought it was common sense to read of the wall of the tyre!

I call wall PSI for most of the year and +2 for the dryer months.

10% above the highest pressure the sticker says when cold. Round 44 pounds if memory serves.

There are some high numbers here. 44/46 PSI. Has anyone checked their max inflation PSI?

I am running 36psi all round on my 235/45/17 Pzeros.

But I even ran 36 Psi on my 15" Bridgestone Adrenalins/GIII. (Max inflation IIRC was 40 psi)

Any lower and I was wearing out the shoulders. But thats going to happen when you throw the car at corners all the time & really lean on the tyres sidewall.

I run 36, I need to run more like 40+ to stop the tyres wearing on the inside edge but at those high pressure the harsh ride and noise on the crap roads and extra pain on the chassis is not worth the extra tyre wear. 36 psi is also the sweet spot where I gain no more in fuel economy by going higher.

38PSI on the Ford 17"
40PSI on the Mazda 18"

Check them once a month, my wife even hassles me to check the Ford is the thinks the steering isn't right. Running the Ford at 40+ makes the ride to harsh for a family car, 38 is the highest I run it to before the ride becomes too "bouncey".

Thanks for all the posts guys. JUst out of interest are people going off their local favoured gas station tyre pump guage or are people buying their own tyre pressure guages ?

If you've got your own tyre pressure guage and are really happy with how accurate you belive it is, please post the info on its brand and type, where you got it and cost which might be helpful to others. Thanks.

32 seems a little low to me....I'd be upping it to 36 or 38. Do you have any uneven tyre wear? Wearing the outers quicker than the center?

I use air and it comes free with 80% nitrogen. As I refill them the oxygen leaks out so eventually I get more nitrogen anyway.

I run 42 all round in 245/35/19 & 275/35/19 , tyre wear nice an even at this stage, pressure adjustment is made after care full inspection of tyre wear, if using servo to check pressure, only use fixed tyre pressure gauge.

Thats about a 3" difference between them.
Does that mean that I should run my company vehicle, that has 22.5"s, at the same pressure as the 19" people instead of the 120psi that I now use ?
