There's nothing boat anchor in this engine apart from the heavy-ish block. Independant variable cam, dual knock sensors, 24 valves, variable length intake isn't stone age at all. I'd rather have the 380Nm at normal revs than 300 at 5000rpm like some of it's competitors.

As cars get heavier the manufacturers will be wishing they had more torque rather than needing 20 forward gears and 4 reverse gears in the gearbox.
