actually, thats quite an eye-opener, i should keep an out for that at work, its probably more rare than they showed but i will definately keep it in mind

Haven't seen the VID, but you've got the otherside of the coin to consider.

How many tyres are made by a manufacturer for the world market? Or do we reduce it to the Aussie market?

How many different sizes are available?

How many are produced per day?

What and how many of each size do you make in that day to keep up with demand?

These are the things that don't get considered when these sorts of things hit the interweb

svo, I had a similar post to yours before I watched the vid.

It's directed at brand new tyres just sitting around in shops, not getting put on cars for years.
They grow weak and frail because of this and when they're finally put onto a vehicle, at high speeds they become weak and basically strip. It's not a boring video, draws you in and's worth a look imo.

There is also more than 1 system or standard with tyre date stamping if memory serves. (or there was an older system and a newer system).

Having said that, can 'new' tyres de-laminate like that, I always thought that the carcass and tread where moulded at the same time? Or heat treated (vulcanised??) then chemically bonded to pretty much make them 1 hunk of rubber?

A lot of those tyre failures look to be the de-lamination of a retread???

I'm obviously no expert on this... just the first thing that came to mind.

So that makes it ok to put peoples lives at risk? Anyone would think your a tyre dealer.

i look at it like this, if its fine for a large passenger jet to have bald tyres with exposed steel belting and be re treadded, its fine for cars too LOL

yes on your next interstate flight or overseas flight, remember as 100+ton is about to hit the deck at 150+mph your running on re treads that are bald and its wet... OMG...

anyway back on topic, my pirellis are 2 years old, apparently the oils leech out of the carcass and they become hard... next time you buy new tyres make sure they aren't parallel import and request new ones, SIMPLE really

Did anyone check the date on the video, its three years old, current affair ran the stereo here in Aus about that long ago too.

Im a little more concerned with how long we keep them on our cars rather than how old they are when bought from the tyre shop, though Ill be definitely checking what Im getting next time I roll up for new tyres.

Cars that only do small mileages and are driven gently are going to end up with 10-15 year old tyres on them and most likely the tyres are being exposed to harsher conditions than the inside of a tyre shop.
What about your trailer you use once in a blue moon, never going to wear the tyres out on it, mandatory we should have no older than six year old tyres on them too?

There American rubber guy was right, there wasnt any real science/tests presented on just how more likely a tyre was to fail when it became older, the video just showed us a whole lot of truck retread failures lying on the roads, not the same thing.

Either way if we are going to turn over our tyres more often and have old stock chucked it will make the general cost of motoring more expensive(not complaining)

Not a dealer. Just been round the industry for years.

Tyre ordering is done in 3 month cycles, from O/S. It is difficult to anticipate how many tyres and how many of each size to order in advance, because of how many different sizes are available. Just about every car has a different size for it. The BA, for example, has about 6 different OEM sizes. Multiply that by how ever many other cars are out there, with a few different OEM sizes and then the bigger picture should emerge.

It's because of this, sometimes tyres are sitting around for ages. But what do you do?

So there is more to it than what has been posted.

retreads definately delaminate like that, i'm not sure on un-retarded tires, but i guess they can.

There were calls once to make a mandatory retirement age for tyres.
I believe that they said anything over 8yrs old should be removed from vehicles or removed from tyre shops.

This was on a news show a few yrs ago where some of the story had orginated from the USA.

If i had never watched that video i would have gone on with my life thinking that any tyre with a good amount of tread was ok(i still look for sidewall cracking etc)so thanks for posting that vid up,very helpful info.

LOL thats funny.

Yes, the concern is for lower mileage cars and includes hobby and classic cars, that have their tyres fitted for years. Shelf time before fitment adds to that time.
