Ethanol has a lot of advantages. I wonder how many of you know that in the 30s Henry Ford designed a vehicle to run on grain alcohol (which is ethanol) and believed it was the future? Or that the Model T was intended to run on ethanol as well?
Originally 'gasoline' was very expensive and hard to find so alcohol was much more attractive due to its wide availability and low cost. Then 'gasoline' became cheap and people started using it everywhere. The fact that people supposedly report (and by that I mean someone else told them so) problems with ethanol in regular vehicles indicates not a fault with the fuel but with the vehicle. At the end of the day, its all about economics - when oil eventually becomes too expensive, suddenly the engineering challenges behind biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel will magically disappear and business will continue as usual.
