Franco, Its a great lifestyle working on the road and one I wouldn't swap for anything. I encourage any young person to do it especially if you have a talent to offer.
You don't need a Snapon truck either, this one came from a wrecking yard in Sydney swapped a pantec onto it and built it up from there. I gave myself a budget of 15K to build it up.

Oh, except to criticise one and other.
I grew up as poor as people got in those days. My parents were imbeciles. My father managed to get sacked from a storeman's job in the late 60's. I spent most of my childhood sleeping with fleas, cockroaches and mice. I went to 7 schools by the time I was 8 because they couldn't make the rent (they had already had the house repossessed). I used to get dropped at school at 7am freezing cold and alone. And when we finally got it good (pft, divorce and stepfather) it was an 8 square 2 bed house for the 5 of us.

Yep I know, I was there. Begging friends not to buy into the madness, so many lost their homes and life savings. Property is only expensive because people pay the prices. Sooner or later the music will stop..

when I used to work in the aftermarket auto parts retail sector, during the terrorist season I'd get asked at least once a day why there wasn't a "caravan repair workshop" in town..... the concept that such a business would go gangbusters for 3-4 months of a year and then fall flat on its face seemed to be beyond belief to the nomad hordes!

The sound of rats chewing, actually in your room, while you're trying to sleep - and running noisily over the bedhead - is hard to forget.

From what I can gather, the residents in most outback towns consider Grey Nomads – as distinct from the general tourists - more trouble than they are worth. Sure, minimizing expenses while on the road is one thing. But the Grey Nomad hardly spend a cent in the regional areas, and then expect capital city services from the locals with McDonald’s drive through speed, price, and efficiency.

I know some members here are taking the p*** out of us grey nomads here but your comment suggests to me you are one completely misguided fool especially with the spending comment.

Caravaners contribute immensely to regional/outback towns economies more than most other tourists, after all we are spending the kids inheritances.

Cheers from one grumpy pain in the a** grey nomad.

Yeah, but I only had one leg.

My family ate my other one to stop them from starving.

There's a bit of a trend out there that goes beyond this thread, plenty of people have noticed it and it's in the mainstream media.

Well, you are entitled to your opinion. The same way as the locals in the outback towns are entitled to their opinions of the benefits of the Grey Nomads.

Anyway, now that winter is nearly over the Grey Nomads will be heading back down south or towards the coast away from the inland heat. And the outback will (apparently) loose the magnificence and bestowed riches of the Grey Nomads until next winter ….

A caravanner can sell their van at the end of their time with it recouping a large percentage of the outlay.

Last I looked there wasn't too many buildings in all the best places in Australia.

Oh, and for the record, I cycle as well.

My hotel stays are so memorable that even the other guests remember them

There's plenty of hotels in Melbourne and Sydney - don't worry about the rest of the country, there's a reason why these two cities are growing the most.

A caravanner can sell their van at the end of the trip for 25% of what they paid for it.

Resale on vans is surprisingly good.

Sydney and Melbourne are two very big reasons to go and see the rest of Australia. The bits where people are scarce.

Many do so it seems. Hey it’s a free world , if ol Bazza rocks someones world then cool as. But others are free to have a giggle. I’m sure there’s a great episode of “I shouldn’t be alive” in there...how I survived the lack of a good latte!
