There are models listed which I haven't ever heard of. What the heck is a Volkswagen Passatt CC 125 TDI or Volkswagen Polo 66 TDI Comfortline? Of more concern is that someone may actually know!

I would struggle to remember when (if ever) I've seen some of these cars. If these cars were so truly good then they'd be everywhere!

The list seems irrelevant to what most people are trying to make do, and driving with, on a day-to-day basis.

<end of rant>

Not one single Holden. That sucks.

Actually I'm crying my eyes out as I type this.

I think you're confusing quality with popularity mate...

McDonald's is the most popular restaurant in the world.
Commodore is the most popular car in Australia.

Should I go on?

Do you have some other nominees for some of the categories then?

Well being the Auto clubs we know the Aurion AT-X has already wrapped up the large car. So fingers crossed the Fiesta can get something

May be you should go and check these cars out before putting them down.
Polo is a turbo diesel (66kw 1.6l). Google is a good start.

My parents have a Polo 77 comfortline and it is a fantastic little car...oozes quality.

It will be a tough one between the Fiesta and the Polo, both are by far the best small/micro cars under 25k.

The categories are mostly meaningless , as if any manufacturer builds a car with the intention of winning "Best Light Car under $20,000". WTF does "best light car" actually mean, does it incorporate Lego peices? Imagine going down the pub and talking to your mates, or chatting up a girl... Real people with mortgages and families and credit cards buy cars to maximize their options, for example it could be argued that Best Large Car over $60,000 & Best Luxury SUV over $60,000 & Best All Terrain 4WD & Best People Mover = Toyota Landcruiser LC200 Twin Turbo VX or Sahara.

So many cars on the list simply do not represent everyday Australian reality. These cars seem to have caught the eye of the daydreaming latté sipping journalist catering for tofu loving pretenders that inhabit most cities.

And I'll bet your a 'my glass is half empty' man as well.

As I stated before it's not meant to be a what's the best thing for driving in Shorts and thongs.

Keep saying it the Ford Fiesta wins awards all over the World the Europeans love it.
Ford Australia need to find a way to sell more, 1000 units a month is small fish in this ever growing segment..

The BEST all round car in each category.

The LR Discovery is far from the best 4wd off road, but it may still win best offroader due to it's other pluses.

Few VW's on that list. Not surprising really. Drive my mums Golf sometimes and it's fantastic.
It's a 2007 model, I also Drove a 2007 or 2008 SV6 and the Golf drivers better and the interior looks and feels better. And The Golf cost 10K less.

A bit perplexed as to how Kia and Hyundai can get nominations in best SUV over $40k, but no mention of the Freelander 2, which actually will go places other than the road.

Agreed!

Where is all the advertising for Ford's great products?

Holden absolutely smothers us everywhere with ads, but Ford seems to insist upon the notion that because they make a great product, people will know about, test drive and buy it.

They need an agressive marketing campaign I reckon.

The new advert for Fiesta is on TV. Came out about 1-2weeks ago. Basically, its all about the gadgets and the style. Well pitched advert.

ha, this happens all the time. Holden/Toyota never has the best product in its class, often the last or 2nd last in their various classes yet outsells everyone.

People just buy them purely from perception.

May be you don't know the definition of quality or have ever been/seen a quality car. I'd advise you have a look.
To minimise your thinking, i'll help you with a criteria.

- There are no odd panel gaps in the Polo, paint is even.
- Doors shut with a solid thud
- Use of materials inside far exceeds anything in it's class.
- Fit and finish of components are superb for a sub 25k car.
- Handling is second only to the Fiesta
- Engines are economical but are not complete slugs.

Well obviously car makers do not look at what awards to build a car to.
They build it for a market, winning a car within a category is a bonus.
What is wrong with winning an award for best car in class?

Best light car is a small vehicle, use some common sense. What would you like to see small cars competing with? Merc S class?

They're broken up into the categories that best fit the market the car is built for. I didn't think it could be much more difficult to understand.

All terrain incoporates all types of terrain, off road and on road. Landcruiser is a pretty good all terrain car, just ask the UN.
The jeep is a good off road vehicle.

How about it might just be that the Germans might know how to build good quality cars.

Your suggestion is too generic, most people have credit cards, mortgages, etc. Doesn't mean they all will have the same budget or requirements for a car.

It isn't about the purchaser in any case. It clearly defines the criteria and has split them up into the relevant catgories. Price and function of the vehicle. Can't be much easier than that. Who cares what people can and can't afford, that doesn't make the vehicle any worse or better.

Our little Fiesta is a cracking car. Having owned a VW Passat, I think the German Ford cars are every bit as good as the other German stuff.

Calling the Golfs "sports cars" is a bit of a stretch, they are hatches.
