Default Grand Prix - A Metaphor

Today's media coverage of the Melbourne Grand Prix includes pics of various celebrities, politicians and plutocrats.

It is significant that a whole bunch of rich people get into this publicly funded event for free.

Yes they do?

You do realise though that the corporate areas where 'clients' or celebs congregate for free are paid for by the corporations and sponsorship and without this the chances of having a Grand Prix would be nil? Someone pays ...... some do get in for free if they are high on the celeb food chain but someone pays.

I have been a guest many times and not paid ...... but the company that invited me to attend paid a crap load.

Corporate sponsorship ..... while it seems unfair ..... helps fund these expensive events so the regular blokes can have a lower entrance fee and actually have an event to go to. If you are lucky enough to be associated with a sponsor ..... good luck to you

At least its not like the VRC where they pay for celebrities to show up in the birdcage during cup week at Flemington, or have "fashions on the field", with the majority of the people in the show being models and one or two randoms from the course.

Or have a singer/band come out to perform before a major race, but make them mime rather than sing live.

A whole bunch of my mates got in for free for all four days.
But in return they provided two ski boats, a number of jet skis, and fuel, etcetera, to put on a water sports show for the crowds entrainment.
They did NOT get paid for it, and I can tell you, Albert park lake is cold and shallow!

Oh, yeah and I paid close to 500 bucks for my 4 day grandstand ticket, got robbed and blead dry by food and drink vendors, to drink beer I would not even contemplate buying from the liquor store, and try to eat food I'd hesitate giving to my dog.
But I had a good time and will do it all again next year.

I reckon the food was worse this year than it ever has been ..... maybe because I had to pay and had to mingle with the masses instead of corporate smorgasbord Scotch and coke (my shout, 4 please ... "That'll be $42.00 thanks) .... and not much variety of food on offer. I suppose we don't go for the food though but being there from 10.00 in the morning to 7.00 at night you tend to get a bit peckish!

Still ..... always bloody good entertaining day with heaps to do and see. If Melbourne give it up it would be an absolute shame.

Add up what you spent on food and grog over the entire 4 days and I'll bet you come close to what we paid to go corporate per ticket.
We used to get 4 day Gold Fangio stand passes and then spend a truckload on food and grog.
Food laid on and all the drinks you can handle (spirits included)....

We went for a walk for old times sake back over to behind the Fangio stand and had a drink in the Johnnie Walker bar, 2 beers and 1 Johnnie S&C was $28!!!,
headed straight back.....haha
