Default Whats going on with GAS prices?

I thought that tax wasnt meant to come until 2012 or something? The Govt promised gas prices wouldnt rise by a significant amount... BUT...

Last week i filled up for 35.9 cents per litre, TODAY i was shocked to find gas prices had risen to 56.9!!!

Does anyone know whats going on?
If it raised by a few cents i'd understand, but 20...

Has anyone else got such high prices or is it only Melbourne?

The government controls the excise (and has obviously set the GST at 10%) but has no control over the price. I think you'll find the government promised gas wouldnt rise as a result of taxation...

It's very similar to oil (LPG a by product of petroleum isnt it??) - follows the laws of supply and demand. Australia produces plenty of its own gas but we must pay the international price, otherwise the australian producers will simply sell it to higher bidding overseas customers - just like oil.

Id also speculate that sustained high petrol prices will further increase demand from LPG as many people jump onto that bandwagon... which will drive the price even higher....

Shop around bud, I "filled up" ($16 @1/2 tank wooohooo) @41c per litre @1.00pm today at Mobil on Sth Gippy Hwy in Dandy, not my usual servo but seemed cheap at the time, general rule with gas is @1/3 price of petrol, bloody shame it gets dragged up with petrol prices, thanks for the info, you've confirmed my good judgment.........pity we can't store the stuff!!!

the tax starts 2007 @ 2.5 cents/yr for 5 years . whatch it increase then as the more it goes up the more gst people pay. plus they'll get the 12.5cents per litre.they will be happy to see price rises , just like they are laughing all the way to thier retirement with petrol.

Up near my area, Doveton BP had lpg at 42.9, whereas Shell and BP near Cranny had it at 56.9!
Still cheaper than fuel though. (But for how long?)
