Sorry if it's been posted.

Peter Brock killed in rally crash
MOTOR racing legend Peter Brock has died in a car crash in Western Australia. He hit a tree while competing in rainy conditions in the Targa West rally.

The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) said in a statement the accident occurred at about 1.50pm, 30 kilometres north-east of Perth.

It was raining at the time. Brock lost control on a bitumen road and hit a tree. It's understood that he died on impact.

A spectator at the rally told Philip Clark's program on Macquarie Radio that he was standing just metres from the site of the accident.

"The back end just slid out and that was it, it was all over," he said.

"The car didn't roll, the back end just slid out from behind him and slammed straight into a tree and it got him right in the driver's door."

Choking back tears, the spectator - who identified himself as Jock - said "not a thing'' could have been done to save Brock.

The witness said that the accident happened on a "treacherous bend''. He said Brock "lost it'' a little on the first part of the bend before straightening up.

"The back end (then) just seemed to hit a bit of ... gravel on the road that the other cars had thrown up and he just lost it, straight into a tree.''

He added: "I didn't realise who it was at first, then I realised who it was and I was just heart-broken.''

Sixty-one-year-old Brock's co-driver Mick Hone has been taken to hospital in a stable condition.

A spokeswoman for the Swan District Hospital said Hone was admitted to the hospital's emergency department. Hospital staff had spoken him and were assessing the extent of his injuries.

He is likely to be transferred by road ambulance to a Perth city hospital, possibly the Sir Charles Gardner or Royal Perth Hospitals.

CAMS said it will conduct a full investigation into the incident. In the meantime, CAMS and event officials are working with the relevant civil authorities.

"On behalf of the motor sport community, CAMS offers its sincere sympathy to Peter's family and many friends," the statement said.

The long-time partner of Brock says he died doing what he loved.

A shattered Bev Brock, who never married the driving great but spent 28 years together with him, told The Daily Telegraph it was somehow fitting he had lost his life on the race track.

"All I can say is he never wanted to get old and died obviously doing what he loving doing,’’ Mrs Brock said.

"He loved driving ... he had such a passion for it. I suppose if you're going to go, you may as well go doing what you love.''

The Brocks split up in May 2005.

Targa West Chaplain Kim van Keule, who is responsible for consoling competitors and officials with personal grief, said he was caring for Brock's new partner.

"She's my first priority at this point. As you can understand she is terribly upset," Mr van Keule told The Telegraph.

"Brocky'' - or "Peter Perfect" as he became known to fans - is famed for his success driving Commodores for the Mobil Holden Racing Team. He won the gruelling Bathurst 1000 race a record nine times. Brock's racing career started behind the wheel of an Austin A30 in 1967 and two years later he came third at Bathurst.

His first win at Mt Panorama came in 1972. He officially retired from full-time racing in 1997.

He was arguably's Australia's best-loved motor-racing figure and his death comes just days after the nation went into mourning over the death of Steve Irwin died in a freak accident off Queensland.

man, how can you put it in words? I have been a Holden man since I was a little kid (but happy to own a ford) And loved Brocky ever since. I loved watching the bloke racing. Such a shocking loss. My condolences to his family and friends.

Long Live the legend

Judging by some of the comments, it appears that many members do not realise that he had a stint driving fords.

Hows about the Peter Brock 1000 or Peter Brock 500.
Lets face it he did a lot for Australian Motorsport and many charities as well and maybe deservse a race named after him.

Oh and maybe the moderators could let the people who choose this platform to post thoughtless and tastless remarks have a week or 2 off

goodbye another Aussie Legend.........who will relace them?

R.I.P Brocky truly the "King of the Mountain". Absoloute legend and V8SC Champ! I can't believe he's gone!

I'm sure there will be a tribute on TV and at Bathurst this year...

How weird is this? Steve Irwin and Brocky died 4 days apart and their birthdays are 4 day apart!

So sorry to his family and friends. Even though he drove for Holden he is still my hero.

Please no more deaths, unless its Germaine Greer after the absolutely horrible things she said about Steve Irwin. She'd better not say anything about Brocky!!!

Once again R.I.P you absoloute legend!
