Don't know if it was the same one (there must be a few floating around), but there was a EB "Cobra" for sale just recently on Templestowe Road in Bulleen. Interior was done up as well.

I wouldn't have thought it mattered, the stunt double MM car is a rusty ole hulk?

The original MM car wasn't converted back to MM1 spec, it's still got the big tanks in the back.

One car thats never been proven to still exist is the Yellow car Max drove. The other two are definitely accounted for.

That Crock Dundee ute apparently sat in a shed just outside Bunbury or Busselton in WA for a long time, the dash should be signed by Hoges if it's legit.

Edit: that coupe outside the Silverton pub is a replica owned by the pub.

The guy who owned it (Bob Forsenko) had got tired of it and put in in the Birdwood museum. The owner of the COTS museum (Peter Nelson) was at a convention held at the Birdwood Museum and decided to purchase it.

The "March Hare" and "Big Bopper" Pursuit cars were wrecked.

However Max's "The Dark One" Interceptor remains M.I.A.
Alledgedly this car was a genuine GT (like the black on black Pursuit Special).

A few years ago in the old Street Heat publication there was a feature on 2 MM replicas.
One was a B on B Pursuit Special replica the other was a Y/R/B Interceptor replica.
Now at the time of the article they owner of the "Dark One" replica was trying to find out
any info he could on the car's history (he had not built it, just bought it as it was).
The car had strange fittings on the doors that could have been used for camera rigs and
it had disappeared from vic roads rego database sometime after 1976.
The writer of the article speculated that the car in the feature could be the actual movie car.

That is exactly correct, I have seen it up close, the reason it is there is because parts of Mad Max were filmed at the pub and surrounding roads.

That pub has been in quite a few films.

I knew the owner of that car (Grant Hodgson) and have been in it. I also knew the owner who purchased it from a guy who claimed to be a camera man on the MM1 movie, at this point it had the NSW rego CUP 862, I tried tracing it through the NSW Police but didn't get anywhere. tracing that rego would hold the key I suspect.

I helped Grant trace the history of it, and it was definitely a GT, and going from a misty memory now, it was originally sold by a Ford dealer either in Fremantle or Rockingham in WA (Challenger Ford).
For a while, it was used as a burnout car in WA at Bunbury speedway, the owner before Grant used to tie it down on the back of a tray top truck and do burnouts while the truck drove around the track, ive seen the video's, huge clouds of smoke, siren blaring and lights going etc.

Now the oddities, it had square metal plates bolted to the rear doors on the inside, these plates had pivoting loops sort of like trailer shackles, they COULD have been used for camera mounts and were already fitted by the guy who purchased it from the camera man.
It had a big weight hanging under the front of the car, it was claimed that highway patrol cars had this fitted in order to keep the nose down at high speeds, i'm not sure about that.
The overhead radio was quite accurate.
One of the dash blanking plates (think it was the A/C outlet one) had some sort of writing on it tying it to Ray Beckerly who was involved in the car design for MM1. I spoke to Ray and he confirmed what I already knew, the movie car wasn't a GT. Interestingly, he also told me he kept the compliance plates of the cars in his safe at his office, which at the time of the call had been broken into and stolen.

I'm of the opinion that this car was owned by someone connected with the movie, but definately not it.

Another car owned by Michael Rennie claims it's the original, this one fits the description exactly but I believe Ray didn't confirm it was and i'm not sure it previous history has been unearthed.

The XA (6 cylinder ex taxi) and XB where definitely wrecked. I have seen the pics of them piled up at a wreckers in pieces.

Street Machine Sept 94 has Michael's car in it. Article refers to Ray Beckerley assisting with the restoration so it could be the real car ?? Also mentions it was a Victoria police car 1st time around prior to Ray getting his hands on it

Sorry to go a little off topic here but the post mentioning the Bill Bourke XY GT reminded me of my old mans wedding.

The day before my dad got married he was in that vehicle with his best man (the best man owned it at the time). Anyway they were idiling down the main street of Kyabram in Victoria and a few blokes down the main street started getting into my dads mate about how the car he was driving wasnt a GT and that they didnt make GT's with a 428 Cobra-Jet motor and they were driving a mock-up. Well my Dad's mate wasnt happy about that so he floored it laying two black strips up the main street and got done by the cops. Dad spent the night before his wedding in the lock-up.

I was looking at his wedding photos a few months ago and he had the Bill Bourke XY GT and two other XY GT's as his wedding cars.

Just a bit of useless info for you.

I don't think the Black on Black pursuit special was a GT. I thought (although without any corroborating proof) it was a John Goss.

the guy that owns 'BLOWNZ' - the black HZ sedan with the ridiculous amount of spacers under and on top of the blower - and the old roman autotek VS/R ute owns the Astill coupe. has quite a collection of well known ex-show cars. His name escapes me right now though..

edit: James Scarlett is the guy. also has the old heatseeker HK.

The original Black on Black was a genuine XB GT coupe. Last reported to be in the cars of the stars museum in Keswick England. It is still in MM2 guise, but has a modified panel van concorde/arcadipane front clip resembling the MM1 movie look with the large lower front air dam.
I have a few older pics somewhere of it after they wrapped up filming of the MM2 black on blacks scenes where the injector hat looks to be squashed down a bit as if someone sat on it. 1 shot of the engine bay, and 2 or 3 outside shots from memory.
it was rough and scruffy as then.

The stunt double was just a falcon 500 coupe tarted up for the rollover scene. It was blown up and burnt. Its remains still exist today, parked out of the way now in a shed instead of being outside, and theres virtually nothing recognisable left of it now bar that it was a mangled coupe. Oh an someone knocked off one of the tanks that was fitted to it.

The march hare XA was just a 6 cyl ex taxi falcon.
The big bopper car was an ex police car with 302 v8 column auto.
both cars destroyed and sent to the wreckers.
Would love to see any pics of them from after the movie in the wreckers etc.

The Max XB sedan was a Falcon ex poilce inteceptor. had the gs bonnet and driving lights, also had falcon badge on the grille and falcon 500 trim and NO gs dash or wheel. it wasnt a GT. at the best it could have been a T code police interceptor, but only some numbers will confirm that.

There was a replica of the yellow beasts at Pick A Part Cambellfield years ago. Well I thought it was a replica at the time as the paint and detail was slap shot at best. Lots of over spray under the bonnet etc. It was recycled in a few weeks. Later I was told the paint on some of these cars was done quite quickly and have always wondered if it was one that got away???

Anyone know what happened to:
The Firth/Jane Falcon that won the Armstrong 500 in '62?
The Bryan Byrt XA Sports Sedan (formerly John French's Bathurst Falcon) from the early 70's?
The Phase 4 1/2 Coupe, or the following multi show winning vans;
'Dynasty' the first custom XD van,
'Total Eclipse' black XC van with LTD front,
'Hallucination' blue XB van and
'Moody Blue' XA van which apparently set the standard for show vans in the 70's.
