Last time I checked, route 66 doesn't really exist anymore? Large sections are now covered in bush overgrowth and many ghost towns remain of what used to be highway towns. So I guess it will always be an unlivable fantasy ?

That is correct to an extent. It has been rerouted many times since its inception. It no longer stretches as a complete road from Chicago to LA, however its still possible to travel along many sections. Which is good enough for me

I see, great info mate. Do you happen to know if its true that they're pretty open to 'spirited driving' out on the open road (interstate highway, desert roads), or is law enforcement practically the same as in Australia where you get stung out in the middle of nowhere by a cop hiding in the bush.

This would vary with what state youre in I suppose. It is still classified as an alternate road, so police presence would be a logical assumption. But given ive never been on it yet, I wouldnt know for sure.

I know a bloke who's cursing speed from San Francisco to Vegas is 130mph. It's only a fine in Cali, no loss of licence. I'm not to sure about Nevada they have a lot of zero tolloarnce laws.

Yep, depends on the state and the mood of the coppers really. 5 - 10 MPH over the limit and you should be fine. Anything more might see you get attention from them. I've driven over there and was passed by a police car whilst doing 70MPH in a 65MPH zone. Scared the crap out of me as I didn't notice them coming up behind me, but all the traffic was traveling above the limit and I was just keeping up with traffic.

Just to start off, it's US$300 just to go one way, then add on the cost of the rental which start in the range of quite a few hundred dollars per day, for a maximum of about 100 miles! Being able to get more than 2 or 3 cars for a short notice out of town trip on a Friday or Saturday night!

Ahh those were the days, 10 or so cars heading to Port Wakefield for a late night snack or down to harass the bunyip at Murray Bridge at 9 o'clock at night!

That being said, Route 66 in some form of drop top classic is a big one for me too. As is the Autobahn.
