I think the lower spec model will be targeting the upper spec mainstream cars such as:
* Chrysler 300 S * Lexus IS250 Luxury * Nissan Altima L33 * Ford Falcon FG MkII G6E * Subaru Liberty 5GEN 3.6X * Toyota Aurion Sportivo ZR6 / Presara * Holden Calais VF V * Honda Accord V6L The above cars cost between $55k and $65k give or take. Even if they stole 10% in the sales from each of those it will be a win for Genesis. You can argue, on paper that the Genesis probably out does all the above in terms of bang for your buck - the combined consumption sticker may be on the higher side but that's what happens when you put a largish engine into a car. This is the second generation Genesis, I have been driven in the first gen one in Korea and it was a very well executed car. This one should be even more refined. RWD, long warranty, decent (above average) power, free servicing, long list of included goodies and built by a brand that has a loyal customer base that's growing after several years of solid sales. It seems the badge is the biggest problem to many. Such a shame. If I were in the market for a large $60k sedan it would be hard to pass up on a Genesis.

The American adverts even from way back then however had the correct pronunciation (which we know now). The advert said "Hyundai...rhymes with Sunday". It's only in recent years that this has been corrected here...wonder it took so long. Another fun bit about Hyundai...I remember Jeremy Clarkson saying, responding to British press criticism of the excellent Tiburon coupe, that it "looked too much like a Ferrari". He said something like "I'm sorry...it looks too much like a Ferrari?? That's like complaining because your wife looks too much like Uma Thurmon..." End of history lesson. |

Excels and Accents may have lasted a long time but they aren't very good cars. Excels feel like they have a plastic gearbox, have zero sound deadening and the engines rattle from factory. Accents didn't feel much better either. That's the issue with Korean stuff. It may look good, have plenty of kit and stay together but its still built to a price. It wont ever feel like an expensive car. Same way a Falcon or Commodore never would.

Good luck to them. They will pick up some buyers seeking a 'luxury car' Studies overseas have shown that the type of people who buy cars like this are previous owners of cars with prestige badges, the aspirational crowd will stay away from them. I guess they work out the neighbours weren't really that impressed after all by the high end car but still want something with all the gadgets.
Biggest failure for this car is the fuel consumption given that it is only a V6. If it was the V8 this would have been forgivable. |

Yeah, EcoLpi FGX is nearly as efficient with two less gears.

Haven't seen one in the flesh so don't want to knock the car just yet but there is one on carsales for over $90K.
If I had that much in my pocket for a new car I don't think I would part with it for a Hyundai. |

I'd say it is a typo or the guy is dreaming (not even an official price). Out of the 6 listed 2 are listed at 67l drive away, there is the 90k one and 2 with POA.

When you said nearly I thought the difference would have been small, say 2-300ml/100km.
Looking at the specs the Genesis has a combined consumption of 11.2L/100 compared to the EcoLpi with 12.3L/100 Whats that roughly? A difference or around 10%? Taking into consideration that the Genesis is wider, longer, more feature packed, heavier (by 200kg!), safer and more powerful while using 10% less fuel than Falcon EcoLpi I think the figures are perfectly acceptable. I will say that the regular Falcon has a combined consumption of only 9.9L/100 which is then excellent compared to the Genesis' 11.2. But the cars are not exact equals. I wonder what the sticker would have said if the Genesis was stripped of some weight and detuned to match the specs of the Falcon? Or on the flip side what would the sticker on the Falcon say if they tried to match the specs of the Genesis?

The FG X Falcon with the N/A petrol now ranges from 9.0 to 9.5 (depending on model).That is an outstanding result for an engine/gearbox/car at the end of its model life.
The Genesis is an all new and much more modern car with a direct injection all alloy engine with a 8 speed auto. Its fuel economy is woeful in comparison to old grandpa's axe. The Genesis is a great car and dose most things very well and see it being popular with certain buyers, but the fuel efficiency is pathetic when you have similar cars developed on shoe strings can hose it down.

Hyundai lists 1880kg for the RWD model, Ford lists 1766kg for the Ecolpi
AWD model Genesis is around 1950kg however. I dont doubt that the Genesis is better than our lowly Falcon just about everywhere, but Hyundai's noodle budget for the engineers would have been greater than the whole FG and FGX budget

Going by the reviews the new C class is supposed to be crazy good. Can't see anything the Genesis has besides a cheaper price. Pass.
