The grounds on which i got a lovely warning from the epa from a concerned citizen, was exessive smoke for more then 2 seconds. I was driving to the mechanics with a split intercooler in the non dpf equiped ranger i drive. And yes, i find it unpleasant driving behind typically newish hiluxs pumping out smoke. To be fair though, before the numpty called the epa, they did call my office, being a sign written car, its not hard to get the office number, but the only phone call i got was from the admin lady having a laugh about the complaint. Hence the further warning.

I'm sure the smoke law is 10 seconds

Im leaning towards the latter by simple logic.

Does anyone know if the manual switch fitted by Toyota is doing the job?
I’ve seen hundreds since they were released. Including prados. Horrific to sit behind. Is like a smoke screen. And to add to it, it absolutely stinks.

Parents have a fortuner, has 70 000 on the clock and has had 0 dpf problems. Its a country car. Dpf's are an issue for a lot of manufacturers at the moment, they are rubbish tech only on these motors for emission purposes. People expect to just turn the key in their new fancy dpf equipped vehicles and ride off into the sunset, unfortunately those carefree days are over, you have to learn how to look after them and no doubt down the track they will still stab ya in the back.

The switch doesn't do what 99% of punters think it does by that I mean, initiate a burn anytime you like. It can only start one once the dash light comes on, it essentially only aids you in getting it to a dealer.

It was never offered as a retro fit in the "this is not a recall letter" either, it can be requested but is assessed on a case by case basis by Toyota.

You can initiate a burn anytime with Torque Pro though.

Having said all that, my work Hilux has been working as intended. Used 90% city 10% freeway.

Fair enough, I see you live in Sydney, perhaps its the constant crawl that causes issues, I live on Adelaide's fringes and our traffic is nothing like the bigger cities even in peak hour traffic so perhaps its sensitive to environment.

Will be interesting to see how it unfolds in any case, certainly hasn't hurt their numbers drastically at this stage.

That's pretty much the way it works on our buses, light comes on and you pull over and initiate the burn though its not about getting you to a dealer, its just how it works on them from what I can gather.
The problems arise when you ignore the light.

Had XF Jag with 2.2 diesel in Singapore. 3 years mostly urban traffic and no DPF problems. This is not a problem with all diesels, only this series if Toyota diesels. Have heard about thus problem for some time.

I havnt seen any prados smoking, but I have seen half a dozen bright, shiney new hiluxes sitting at the traffic lights smoking. And when they take off with the green, its like someone throwing wet grass onto a fire, the smoke is shocking.
Feel a bit sorry for them, when you catch them at the next set of lights and they are looking around with embarrassment at everyone watching their pride and joy puffing more than a 1930s locomotive.

I live south of Perth, and have not seen the hiluxes on the Northlink project that Romulus has mentioned in his post.
But a number of hiluxes the cops run around here in are always smoking.
I have seen them at jobs talking to "customers". while their utes are puffing away like someone has dropped a hand full of oily rags onto their tailpipes.

I would imagine these utes would suffer a bit more as they idle for a prolonged time during shifts

Wait... you mean people who buy diesel work Utes designed for commercial usage are finding issues with them when they’re just driving them around the corner to the grocery store and to kids soccer practice, never allowing them to heat up?

No way.

Article says they are actually copping EPA fines for a factory 'feature' of the vehicle. Wow.

Imagine the advertising opportunity:

There is some irony to this, my TTD V8 Land Cruiser is pre-DPF, when I floor it there is a lot of black smoke emitted - I'd assume perfectly legal.

MY16 was the first DPF’s and many of that first batch of MY16 200’s had injector issues which were fixed under warranty. My truck is MY15 the last non DPF.

I believe any smoke is illegal, regs don’t specify colour. Water vapour or condensation is allowed

Because people are generally becoming less 'car technically savvy' by the day.

What are the terms and conditions of the manual over ride? How many km between uses? At what temperature? At what RPM?

You would be very surprised to know how many people have no clue where the coolant goes, where their spare is kept, what PSI range they should run their tyres at, hell, even the difference between fresh air and re-circulate for the vents.

Relying on an average user to do that much thinking on a critical component of the car is asking for trouble.

Problem is most people have no idea about the mechanical parts of their cars. My brother bought a diesel van last week. He had no idea what a DPF was until I told him. Salesman didn’t say a word.
He uses it for work all day around town. The engine will probably get hot enough, but he probably won’t drive fast and long enough to burn it off.

Most don't even know how to park a car these days.

Haven't got that button, but I have a fancy buzzer that says get the hell out of my way "I'm coming back".

No way.
It's an issue with the vehicle, not the way it's driven. The problem still occurs on cars that have met the required conditions for a burn off. Toyota also fitted a burn off switch to the dash, but it hasn't fixed the problem.

If it wasn't that it was a genuine issue with the Toyotas, all new diesel vehicles would do it, cause a lot of drivers don't ever get them to burn off conditions, and they don't have the widespread issues Toyota drivers do.

But I get what you are saying and many new diesel owners have no clue about dpf issues, and what is required to prevent them.
