SSbaby, you should have quoted the whole artical because the answer is in this statement as to why they can't just put on an extra shift.

"Mr Gorman said working Saturdays was the key to increasing Ford Australia’s record level of plant efficiency, but that bottlenecks in the engine shop, paint shop and stamping plant would limit any production increases."

So Ford will have to :-
1 spend big bickies for a new engine plant with increased capacity (the only
6 cyl engine production line in OZ now that ION's gone bust)
2 spend big bickies for a new paint shop

3 spend big bickies on another stamping plant.

I somehow thing that they are going to repay some of the faith that Dearborne showed when Ford USA pumped 500 mill into ford oz and show the other countries that ford operates in that if you research your market (territory & BA) and build what the customer wants, they'll buy it.

Tru, what about running the paint shop and engine plant on Saturdays to? Or running 24 hours a day with 3 x 8 hour shifts?

Takes more than 3 shifts to work 24Hrs a day 7 days a week think about it. Cost has to be controlled too. Or you know what will happen.

...i think the blokes running this multi-billion dollar company tend to know what they're doing...who are we to argue? (well..unless one of us is a said 'bloke'..in which case i'll shut up.)

Well actually that is possible, most factorys have a quota rate at which the plant run continuously its said to be %100.(its an average)
Where I work(a lead refinery)we work on a 10hr batch cycle(ie the %100 level), this is an average rate, but we have a actual capable capacity of a 8.5hr cycle. If we can get the feed rate from the blastfurnace we can run at a %125 production rate.
Part makers keeping up enough supply of parts with minimal production line break downs, would be a probable cause for fords extra production.

Machine lines for engine parts already run 3 shifts to make the required bits for day shift of engine assembly, so they are already at their limits. To increase capacity Ford need to be able to increase the number of cranks etc to be made per shift to up the numbers but this has already been done a few times and is requiring a good deal of money to increase it again. Most machine lines run 6 days a week and sometimes 7 just to keep up.

My next purchase might be a Territory a good looking SUV with room and power for a family man. The ute's are really only for non family owners or work cars.
