The genuine 427's were very scary to drive. I remember seeing a short video of an original 427 getting punted hard on a circuit and it was constantly trying to snap sideways, the drivers arms were just a blur trying to keep it under control, but he was good and managed to keep it from spinning.

Side pipes can be there, just not functional. Have a look at the side shots - the outlets of the pipes are clean, no soot. The side pipes are purely decorative. Then look at the rear closeup (before the prang shot) - you can see the real exhaust tips either side of the fuel tank.

we went on the same day saw the whole thing unfold took a photo side on before it happened (exact same pic at the start of thread must of been standing beside each other),

the guy didnt even do a burn out to warm up tyres (probably didnt want to ruin paint -no pun intended).

although we didnt see any brake lights he did get a bit sideways didnt even try to slighty correct , looked like something out of a cartoon going straight then a slight sideways slide then BANG , still cant work out how this happened .
didnt even want to ask the guy what had happened .

well lets hope the next build is even better.

See that the problem you see people do. Avoid going through water if your not gonna do burnout but then again with so much Horsepower you wanna warm though tyre up for better grip to avoid slipping all over the track. :eclipsee_

It's not a question of what was on the stock-original car. Any Kit Car must comply with all the ADR's in force on the year of its roadworthy inspection. The only way to have a Cobra with functional sidepipes is to have a ridgy didge one.

My brothers got one with jag suspension and an AU3 XR8 windsor, its an awesome drive, his got 275 x 17s on the back 245's on the front and it handles like its on rails.

Hot rods you can do anything you want with but the cobras have to run fake pipes, we painted the inside of his pipes with matt black paint to look like they run.

Well I am completely disheartened now, for whatever reason the side pipes were something that attracted me to the Cobra's...

Whats the general consensus with club types? Are the fake side pipes laughed at? Just seems like such a waste.

I mean they are still beautiful cars, but you know....

its not laughed at .. as its how they have to be..

if it were on CLUB rego.. then you probably could run them..
but legally .. you cant on a street registered car.. which most usually are so you can take it for a strap any day you like..

alot of hotrods that run big fat side pipes have both hooked up.. but have a blanker plate in between one of the flanges near the junction of the 2 pipes

Just hook the headers up to a Mr Gasket dump pipe after you've passed roadworthy and compliance. Then you can run the normal exhaust on the street and open exhaust for the strip

yes an old formula too much power and light weight and its a handfull...not the first replica cobra to hit a wall and wont be the last.

Ah very good...couldn't you just some kind of temp exhaust for inspection and then put the side pipes on for real afterwards?

I mean seriously, what wrong with them? Do people get burnt? If its good enough for the real ones to do it then why not the copies?

Is it all because the copies are built "now" instead of in the 60's?

Yeah, basically the new ones are classed as LVP (Low volume production) and so while they get out of crash testing etc, they still have to conform to the majority of ADR's. Apparently shortly in QLD they have to fit airbags, my brother bought his as a rolling shell in 2000, he put a 302w out of a ED fairlane but then had to change it to a later model (AU3) because there is a law which prohibits any new kit car having an engine older than 6 years.

They can be expensive to build (he spent over 80k) so sometimes it easier to find a good example already registered.

Yeap depending on how things pan out in the future I think buying one thats done already is the way to go, you can always change bits if need be.

You can pick up good looking ones for $40-50k so thats alright, id rather something like that than an old falcon anyway, but thats just me I guess. :

Any pics of your brothers car?

Even better would be a GT40 rep, but I want a convertible as a weekender.

OT: (although most of the post in this thread are..LOL)..can you make a convertible out of the GT40 reps? A bit like that concept in the US, a targa roof should be that hard to sort out.

The shifter went in because it was in a rush to get it complianced (rule changes were coming) but a BA auto shifter would be nice. Its got AU indicator stalks and commodore (shudder) air con vents. You can use torana chassis but its worth spending the extra money and getting the box section chassis and jag irs rear end. I'll get some better shots of it, all its really missing is a procharger!

Yeah, they're nice to look at, and to listen to if the exhaust is set up nicely. Absolutely awesome.

However on the open highway its a different story being in one. I can imagine the wind belting into ones ears despite the wind deflectors, becoming quite uncomfortable after a while.

I havent driven or ridden in a Cobra, but can imagine they would be similar to an MGB (I have one) without the side window where the buffeting wind comes around from the side and above the windscreen. Remember this if you are contemplating buying or building one.

Not to mention the hot sun directly on your head. Not a cool car really. Drive one first on the highway for some distance.

Great around the local streets though.
