I started my Ford life owning Cortinas one of those being a Mk4 (or TE as their known in Australia).

These were the biggest selling car in the UK during their years of manufacture as well as in NZ. They are now the rarest out of all Cortina models. According to some stats I came across on the net awhile ago, out of 1.2 million Mk4/TE's produced only around 6,000 remain . Poor rust protection when manufactured believed to be the culprit

I own 2 ford falcon XR's, both running small block V8 Windsors.

One I believe is from the classic "Muscle Car"
period the other one is 32 years younger.

And I love driving them both.

Glad to see the 99 model is still alive and well out there too.

Do these stats include those registered on club plates?

It's tempting to let the rego lapse on the ED, keep up maintenance, then re-register for club plates. A second young one learning to drive manual might see me register it for another year.

I wonder how many EDs are out there in garages/sheds compared to the registered 10%?

hi everyone

noticed a few defected cars on the upullit stock list and wondered what would have likely got these defected when they didnt look like they had much wrong with them and what would likely reason be why people didnt fix them

another reason is, would there have been a chance some were on lpg and the tank was out of date

Only an enthusiast will care about preserving the old E series or AU. Most end up owned by low income earners, living outside till the head gasket or auto dies and the repair bill means they sell it for scrap. If I had a big shed or property I would most probably be in a position where my wife is threatening divorce because of my habit. I’m already in the **** for too many cars.

I had another look at the website with the statistics, and found that numbers have changed over the last few months. The theft statistics may not have updated and still says 2018, but the number of registered vehicles have changed, so it appears that may be the actually registered right now.

Interesting. However, I noticed that the Fairmonts are listed separately:

Fairmont ED: 1191
Fairmont EF: 4722
Fairmont EL: 4702
Fairmont AU: 15500
Fairmont BA: 14398
Fairmont BF: 6251

So you should add this to your totals. You're also missing the EF?

I doubt the accuracy of the figures for specific models of still registered vehicles.

You mean those driving with home made plates or cloned plates

Yes sorry MrZ, I only spent some minutes updating those I looked up in January. Feel free to make a more complete overview. Did the Fairmont numbers change much too?

I noticed Ranger PX has gone from 175000 to 195000 !
Mustang 15-18 has also added approx. 2000 units. (no listing after build year 2018)

I am in the process of restoring my 1997 EL Fairmont Ghia, we bought it in 2000 had it about 10 years, sold it to my daughter, got it back for free late last year. Regency with cappuccino leather interior

$1000 P plate specials definitely have an impact declining the future existence of a model. When i first got my license we were guilty of buying cheap Cortinas and X series Falcons out the paper and running them into the ground. I have watched it with every model since until id say the FG as it still holds some decent coin.


From my observations over the years when a model gets around the $1000 mark they are snapped up by that generation of P-Platers. Usually a 2.5in zorst gets thrown on and many burnouts follow, until it becomes a thrashed out ****box, then scrapped. Then the process is repeated until they become rare and the next $1000 special becomes the victim.



I go from seeing and hearing... them everywhere to once in a blue moon over a couple of years. Right now id say it's safe to say the AU-BF is the current p plate special. The secret is to snatch one up now and look after it because they will become rare and die out. Boxcars got flogged out in the mid 2000's the EL's copped the same fate a few years back and now the AU is getting a hiding.


Watch those numbers plummet over the years to come

There are some pretty sweet low km AU-BFs around at present for comparatively little coin. Save them from the P Platers!

AU XR6 is getting more rare as they are very desired for the early P's, hard to find good original one. The V8's and BA turbos are off limits in some states, so they survive in a greater %. (The turbos though, get heavily modded by many 20 something owners so finding original ones is difficult.)

Young one spent big (for his savings) on FG1 XR6 - completed 1 year now, off red P's, car still looks immaculate and the Limited Edition leather inside still in great condition, no accidents. 177,000km now. A lot of his mates are totalling cars or having major parts fails (like a Cruze transmission) and coming around and buying BF or FG.

This is what Wikipedia has to say about AU:
Developed under the code name "EA169", the AU series adopted Ford's New Edge worldwide styling, which was meant to differentiate it from the "conformist" styling prevalent in the 1990s.[33] The gamble, which had worked with the Ford Focus, did not particularly endear the AU Falcon to its buyers.

AU still isn't endeared by me either, and probably never will be, but on the other hand I also much dislike the looks of US Taurus from the same years

The only thing AU has going for it in my view is the reliable and simple mechanics. Same class as Volvo's 240 series probably. Could last over a million km with some basic fixes. Despite that approx. 16000 of them have disappeared from Australian roads over a few months from January to October.

Anyway, let's not start another AU discussion in this thread. Apology if my comment upset someone.

I get calls every day for particular parts on AU Falcons that we don't have as regular production items, its usually inquiries from Burson and Repco branches chasing up for the customer in front of them at the counter, so usually said components may cost a customer through a Burson branch $150 or so if its a regular production item.

Except with these particular parts for the AU, they all have to be one off custom manufacture jobs - we need a sample from the car, we'll make it up, but it'll cost the Burson branch 500% more than a regular production item so the end user ends up paying $500+ for it by the time Burson makes their margin on it and naturally their customer is not overly keen on spending $500 per component when they may need 3x of them to keep their car roadworthy so the car just goes to the wreckers.

Older cars just generally aren't worth fixing unless you're an enthusiast and the car has value outside of monetary reasons, especially when its in that transition period between being too new for places like Rare Spares to start manufacturing replacement parts and too old for genuine spares, EF/EL/AU/BA/BF are in this transition period where parts availability is becoming a drama.

BA/BF are starting to get to this point right now that they're hitting wreckers in huge quantities, I'm still waiting on Jefferson Ford to supply a driver side front seatbelt assembly for a BF Falcon that I've been on their books for since 2015

Not many left in circulation and its a common problem, sometimes you can just get away with a bush kit thats available aftermarket, but if the cable snaps then you need the full assembly, there are a few different variations of this particular cable to suit different engine combinations but the shortages are starting to occur on the regular 4sp/4L that's the more common car.

Interesting the amount of cars per year that are dropping - 20,000 loss on registered BA Falcons or there abouts.

We're midst of releasing a new product for BA/BF, its taken us 18 months, opportunity cost of a few hundred thousand bucks easily in missed sales due to inaction and it gets worse every month its not on the market because the amount of registered cars is dropping.

Really it should have been on the market 15 years ago
