I thought they could have done better with the equipment for the dollar. If the top spec variant came in at around $35k on the road, it'd be a consideration, but being $10k more, it doesn't make much sense. |

I'm honestly shocked...that'll bring in a lot of buyers...well...the ones who aren't blinded that something needs bags of horsepower to be in any way fun and engaging to drive, that is...
It's a suitable successor to the original AE86...not a lot of power, but god, what a chassis!!! A good driver in a pretty much stock AE86 could run rings around someone with a much more powerful car. My '82 RA60 Celica (last of the rear-drivers) handles amazingly, is a ton of fun to drive...but only has 60kw. It'll soon have more (roughly double...got a worked 2ltr 18RG with twin side draft Solexs in the shed just waiting), but will it make it a "better" car? Probably in outright speed, but the handling is what makes it fun. As for the air con, won't be long before it's standard...it;s standard on everything from tinny little Suzuki Altos and similar cars to everything else from the big Jap makers, so no surprise if it becomes so in the 86. Watch the after-market go ape once a few of them are around...just like the original! It's looking more and more like our next car will be one of these things... For a weekend car I'd buy one of these in a heart beat. After taking my F6 through the mountains, then a Silvia, I'd take the smaller car any given Saturday or Sunday.
In red, sure the 86 looks a little 'girly', but in black with a decent exhaust, tune and tyres it would be a rocketship of cool weekend fun! |

Cracker of a price but for me, just doesn't have enough go to get me interested. Throw a turbo/supercharger on there, $10k on the price and the upspec gadgets, then you've got my attention.

I like it! Handling and fun is way better than torque!
I like how Topgear says sciroccos and Golf GTi etc are not fun, I absolutely agree with that! Torquey turbo power right through the rev ranges is boring. Give me high revving NA any day of the week, ie Renault Clio Sport. |

The torque deficit is minimised by light weight, shorter gearing. And revs. Lots and lots of revs. Yeah if you like plodding along at low revs then its probably not the right car for you. |

I like plodding around at low revs so this is probably not the right car for me, but kudos to Toyota for pricing it so sharply! I'm also thrilled that the manual version isn't jacked up to be the same price as the auto.
I've heard some great things about this car's steering and chassis balance. The beginning of a return to form from Toyota?

I hope my missus wants a new car soon. It would be good to get her into one of these, at least I would actually enjoy driving her car. Black, with black wheels. I think it would look the part. She can only drive auto, but that's ok. Especially if it has steering wheel paddles, I love them. |

The subject is the one vehicle with different power levels not comparing two completely different vehicles. Or do you mean that if you have a heavy car that does not handle increasing the power rather than improving the dynamics thereby making it more difficult to control and therefore actually slower in everything except a straight line but looks more "awesome" is a more sensible option? well if powerball comes up on Thursday night, I'll be off to Toyota.
I've loved the look of this car since they released the first prototype images. Very surprised to see it under the 30k mark - I think this would surprise a lot of makes!

We were discussing the price at work yesterday. Sure there's been a bit of development go into the vehicle, but there are a fair few carry over technologies/parts used from other Toyota and Subaru vehicles in the car.
When you pull it down and ignore the simple fact that yes its a rwd coupe which is exciting, you have to accept that in simple terms it is a sedan (for arguments sake) with a 4cylinder n/a engine. On paper, what more does it offer than say a Corolla at $21,990 for a manual, $9k worth? Probably, but $15-19k worth? Wouldn't think so! Therefore it's reasonably priced! Not to mention, get a GTS automatic and you're up to the $37,500 mark which is getting up there.. Also; expect Subaru to be dearer as where Toyota have two models (GT & GTS) Subaru will only have one. What features it has I'm not sure of however.

I so want one of these. Dont care that it has no power or torque, 6 speed manual and have it scream to over 7000 rpm. Now I just need about 12k and I can trade the Mazda 3 daily in on one.

The Toyotas Subaru twin, the BRZ, gets absolutely slammed in the latest edition of EVO magazine (European). No torque, slow and in desperate need of more power. It gets flogged by the Megane (fair enough, a lot more $) but also the MX5.....
They then go on to pit it against an original WRX and the news isn't good again for the newie... |
