Everyones buying a new car.... is it your turn?

I've never owned a new car despite being more than capable of buying one.

I like the thought of having a brand spanker but when warranty is not worth the paper it is written on, I'm not fussy with colours or options and the one I own now owes nothing I'm not in a great rush to get one.

Had a number of well maintained second hand cars that have never let me down. I take delivery of my first ever new car in June which is my XR8. Was hard for me to justify except it is the last one ever and I don't want a second hand performance car. Being debt free and cash in the bank to pay for it got it over the line.

I know people who have bought new cars, I have never had anyone making smug comments towards me about their new car.

All this talk about only buying second hand cars does make sense, but there still needs to be new car buyers. Otherwise how do cars become second hand? No I don't think we should buy to impress others though

On topic: the Bank of International Settlements came out a couple of years ago and mentioned it was a goal to double the world's debt levels within a decade or so. I am sure your friends and self can contribute to this noble goal.

Its all about priorities in life, some people have no problem dropping 700 grand on a mortgage and shudder at the extra 8 grand to go from buying a 3 year old car to brand new.

We all have our own motivations and wants. I buy used and new, and I think personally used cars are pretty poor value in Australia. Maybe because motoring is so essential in this country that it keeps a floor price on used values. I would still happily buy used to save money though, but last few cars have been new (nothing fancy, normal family cars and my beautiful custom ordered bright red, heavy duty tow pack, ECOLPI column shift auto, LSD, 180,000km FGII ute).

Personally, I think that's partly to do with the big leap forward in in-car entertainment tech and safety tech over the past few years, such that people feel the need to upgrade. Finding a good bakery is the hard part, plenty of them around but theres only two I've been to that do alright meat pies.

Made the mistake of stopping into the first bakery I saw in Heathcote while rolling through to the AFF Nationals last year, their custard tart tasted like dish washing detergent.

Driving through, big sign saying "BAKERY".

Roger that. We need a 'Best Eats' thread. Sometimes its hit or miss. Truckies usually know where the best food is. I've used Trip Adviser on occasions, but even that can be misleading. Buying new largely stops doubting toms from picking apart your purchase.

For instance if i had a 50,000km territory and my neighbour drives in with a used bmw x5, on first impression and to the passer by he has won. But when he starts bragging and i say "how many km"??? Then he starts getting hot under the collar and mutters under his breath "200,000", i see gutter rash on his rims and a tear in his leather seat and then his bubble just pops. Like he just got dunked in the pool.

New v new it becomes type of car dictates the win but used its not clear cut, condition becomes a huge factor. (New falcon beats a 7 year old merc with 162,000km)

the vast majority of respondents don't give a toss, dont judge you for your purchase or compare you to themselves, wouldn't batter an eyelid if you drove a new falcon or an old merc.

I think Damo has hit the nail almost on the head.
Cars are the most affordable they have ever been in Australia. making them cheap (comparatively) in comparison to years ago. Coupled with significant housing price rises across large swathes of Australia the equity in ones home has increased such that adding a car loan to the mortgage is easy, makes car purchases more palatable to many.
