Default mini spool ???

hey guys and gals im trying to find out wat spline the au XR6 has... i think its 28 but i dunno.. puting a mini spool and stall converter in ... neeeeeeeeeeed help :

why would you go the mini spool? they belong in crappy vl turbos koz they are "fully sick!!!" seriously dude, get an lsd. better drivability, and less stress on your driveshafts. i GUARANTEE you will snap a drive shaft within the first 6 months of getting it installed. pay the extra coulpe of hundred and get a nice lsd with some 3.7gears, a 2500rpm stall and a stage 2 cam. good luck with it though.

p.s: not meaning to bash, but i just dont like seeing people go the cheap 'n' nasty alternatives when it comes to midifying falcons. we dont have a red badge, remember that :eclipsee_

I dont think stroking is the best option if you cant afford decent cylinder heads, and ported (lower) intake/or aftermarket intake.

A std stroke 302 with some AFR165's would be a lot more fun than a GT40P headed 331/347.

To be fair though, i haven't driven either....so take my advice with a big grain of salt :P

I have heard of a cheap stroker combo for the 302 using a cheap eagle 3.25" stroker crank, 289 rods, and an off-the-shelf piston from Keith Black (part #kb322 i think?).

The pistons have a chev pin size, so the small end of the rod needs to be opened up just a little, and the piston ends up about .020" below the block deck, so it would need to be decked a little as well.

I haven't done the sums in $AUS to see what it would come to compared to off the shelf kits, but that combo seems pretty well regarded amongst the Mustang guys as the cheapest way to stroke a 302.

yep, as others have said, avoid the mini-spool for road use, its not needed and will cause you dramas...and id almost put money on you wanting to take it out down the track!

you cant push the car easily (whilst turning), it is a pain in the butt for low speed and tight turns, it puts HEAPS more stress on the axles...and what do you really want it for anyway? LSD will do the job nicely on a majority of road cars.

I have a spooled diff, just some info for you from my experience with them ;)

1, people say you always go sideways in the wet without even trying(as in idle through a corner) -- it's not that bloody dangerous! - also some people seem to think you HAVE to go sideways to park - you can, but uneccessary(lol)

2, technically your inner-wheel is losing traction, thus you can get your car impounded if your get a bad cop (has happend to someone already)

3, if 1 wheel has more grip then the other (When doing a standstill) you will get axel tramp(or wheel hopping - either one) and your car will shake violently - back off asap, it's not healthy lol

4, you should spool it, once you go spooled you won't go back (in my case anyway!)

5, everyone has different oppinions, you should try it first and see if you like it or not (or if you know a mate who has spooled diff to test it out first) because you might not like it in the end

6, when you have passengers, they either say 'you're gotta be f*kn kiddn' me its spooled SIK!!' or you get the 'WTF is wrong with your car' - etc etc :P

7, the wider your tyres the badder the hopping(skipping) is, i have 14's on the rears and really thin tyres and sometimes when cornering i don't even notice - feels like a normal car lol - I had 17" rims and 245 tyres' on the back and it was a bit of a pain in terms of the skipping noise

8, not really ideal for the road... but still great fun (i think i've nearly had mine in for 4mnths) not broken any axels, been to qld and back... done alot of burnouts and havn't broken anything at all

If you think spooleds the way to go, save your money,
step 1. remove centre
step 2. fill with weld
step 3. replace centre.

alot cheaper and same effect. Works well in my XD burnout car, but it eats axials.

Its not dodgy, just free if you have a mig. Pull the centre apart, and weld each gear into its corosponding half, and when I say weld in place I mean fill with weld (obviously don't get any weld inside the gears or axials wont go in). Slap it back together and It will NEVER break (the cntre that is, you still eat axials either way).

This is analogous to: "Don't be homosexual, get involved in hot mansex instead"

Either way, you're doing something you really shouldn't with your rear end, and it's likely to hurt you one way or another.

Send it to a reputable diff place and get them to set up the LSD cones.

They are set up very loose from the factory, to keep wallys out of trouble on wet roads.

Its nowhere near as bad as what some people make it out to be!

Heaps of people have them in their dailys with no problems.

at the end of the day its his decision of course, we can only offer our advice and share our experiences

I guess the person looking at it has to decide: is it really necessary? why am i really looking at doing this, because its "SIK" or are there some serious plans that will require a spool? do i really need the hassles of a spool, or will a tightened up LSD be a far better option?

I pity da fool... Serious competition cars don't run spools, and neither should you.
