Default 90MM Maf on Stock Airbox

i was looking into buying a 90mm Maf but when i took out the top airbox lid i noticed that the hole for the maf is much smaller than 90mm. In fact i got a ruler and measured 90mm and there is quite a difference in size from the standard maf hole to 90mm. has anyone installed one to their stock airbox and what was involved. There is a plate that sits between the maf and the airbox lid, did you have to buy a new one with the maf or can u just modify the existing one?

Personally I can't see the point in having a 90mm MAF with the stock airbox as there will still be a restriction in the airbox lid negating any improvements that could be made by the 90mm MAF. If you are serious about intake upgrades there is no point in going that way. Best off to get the intake pipe, MAF & airbox all sorted at the same time.

I have done some mods to the airbox. I have installed a SS Cold Air Intake Kit and another cold air pipe just behind the headlight, it also has a k&n high flow filter and a stainless steel intake pipe so its not really that restrictive. im thinking of getting the 90mm MAF and making some modifications to the air box lid to make it fit and breath better and hopefully get rid of the rough idle after i install it and get it tuned. Just needed advice or information on how to get one to fit.

It might be worth looking at a BA pod type setup, maybe it would be easier to fit it to one of these as opposed to the standard AU box.

I dont think a MAF would fix an idle problem though?

yeah i might do some cutting of the stock airbox and see if it will fit. i will order one now and do alot of thinking about how i will go about it. i might even buy a 6cylinder lid and cut some holes into that just because its got a bit more room to work with as the 8s have the holes and and nuts attached to it. If i get it to fit i will take out the panel filter and replace it with a 4inch pod filter inside the box. ive got a pretty good cold air intake system on it at the moment and dont want to get rid of it. if i manage to find a way to get it on i will post it up for people to see.

The lids on the 6 and the 8s are the same.

The BA Pod style setup is the way to go.

i thought the v8 airboxes have got nuts attached to the airbox for it to fit the standard maf onto it. these nuts will just get in the way of the required 90mm cutting to fit the new maf. i will need a new airbox lid to experiment with so i will just grab a six cylinder one for the sake of it.

would it make any difference if the MAF is a little furthur down the intake pipe? i can probably get it sone on the stock airbox but the maf will be closer to the middle of the intake pipe rather than straigh out of the airbox lid.

That should be OK.

I6 air box lids are the same as XR lids - there is one difference, but both have the nuts you are talking about - the 8s get a MAF, and the 6s get an adaptor for the intake pipe. The difference is the 8s (some, not all) get a trumpet like thing on the inside of where the MAF mounts, but other than that, the lids are EXACTLY the same (I have had 5 of each roughly, and have swapped between models and series - EF to AU and back again etc - and I Mean swapped lids and airboxes not just the cars).

I have seen MAFs mounted right up near the TB - I don't think it's recommended, but it can be done.

I seriously reckon the BA XR8 Pod box is the way to go though, as it will take the 90MM MAF with no modification at all.

Has any one got the part number for the Ba xr8 pod box?
Can it bolt up to a AU with no mods?

Not quite mate, the BA's didnt run a MAF so there is a bit of mucking around to make the MAF bolt to it.

There is also a bit of mucking around to actually get the pod to sit in there, even with a BA pod mounting bracket, though it has to fit as they arent too different in the engine bays.

Hopefully soon i will fit the BA setup onto mine and post info on it when done

Apart from that though, they fit. I had the BA Pod setup on both my AU XR8 and AU I6 wagon - only mod that needs to be done is to cut a section of the BA mount off, but the rest pretty much bolts up to factory holes using factory bolts, IIRC.

And although the BA don't run a MAF (actually, I didn't know that), the opening on the BA Pod is around 3.5" (88MM), so you just need to run a MAF to Pod adapter of that size, the 90MM MAF bolts up to the adapter, and a rubber joiner joins it to the BA Pod. Or use an AU Pursuit/T3 Pod, but BA XR pods are easier to get and cheaper (roughly $50 or so from your local wreckers).

Here's a few old pics of that setup on my XR8:

Nice JC, how did you mount the pod to the engine bay?

Geez, that's going back a bit. I did use the standard BA Pod mount, but had to modify (read cut and/or bend) it a bit. I think I just then screwed it into where the AU airbox usually goes using tek screws or similar (actually, on one, I remember using bolts in the engine bay part, and nyloc nuts in the wheel well, 'cos it was a pain to do them up by myself), and then the Pod just fitted into it's mounting holes on the BA bracket as if it thought it was in a BA. The shape of that part of the engine bay is close between BA & AU (it's closer between EF and AU though), but just different enough to be annoying.

It actually looks like I didn't use the mounting point closest to the fender, but must have just used the one closest to the engine. If I still had either car, I'd undo the 2 bolts and take a pic, but both are long gone.

Looks can be deceiving - I definitely used it, but must have been on one side only.

Another option is to buy an 03/04 Cobra airbox off Ebay, Uses the same filter as BA XR8/GT but with a flange cast in ready to accept a 90mm Lightning MAF. I believe it is the same as the T3 airbox, without the $$$$$$$$$$$$$ pricetag.

Gives the factory T3 look, without the price

I was going to say they use the same pod but looking at that pic now I'm not so sure. Is it normal for them to have 2 openings on the housing??!

hey JC,
where did you connect your tickford cold air intake up to? performance wise did make much of a gain fitting the new airbox? im starting to lean towards that style airbox now but i will wait until i get my maf and i will have a look if it is possible to fit it on to the airbox i got now. Is the cobra style the same as installing the ba xr8 one?

The Base of the pod would be different, thats why the T3 one is so expensive (low production = high cost) The T3 base has a locating pin at the domed end of the base, the Cobra does not.

Having 2 openings has its advantages, as once you utilize the mounting lug on the body, you can then choose which inlet to use and blank off the other. Having a flange/opening for 90/95mm MAF units seals the deal for mine.

I didn't use the tickford snorkel on the xr8 because of the balance pipe. But i did on the wagon. You just need an adaptor from bpt.
