Default window tint

Look, i know theres a fair few threads on window tint but i cant be bothered going through them. Searched a couple of companies in google that i knew of, but in the suggestions box both came up with the name of the company, then complaints

Can anyone recommend a reputable company that they have used in melbournes northern suburbs? Dont want any fancy s*** just plain black tint
Thanks

Our local Tint-a-car did a couple of cars I know of and I don't see a problem with any of them. I'm in Sunbury.

On the subject of tint, any tips on how to get old tint off. I have used scraper but still left with a residue that I just keep scraping and using metho on, but still not good enough.
And has anyone tried tinting themselves, is it as easy as the the advertising says it is.
I've looked on ebay and there's several products and they make it sound easy.
Cheers, sorry to jack the thread but similar topic.

Hey mate,

I'd use a knife to separate the tint from the window and then use a hairdryer or steam cleaner to heat up the tape so it is easier to pull off.

Here are some DIY vids that may help:

Easy Way to Remove Automotive Window Tint

Hope the links help.

Yeah, I used them as well no probs, used Midnight Express (metallic) which isnt as reflective as the Octane which is otherwise similar, but they use a matching carbon base film on the FG back window where there is a radio antenna.

I think they also remove old film. IMO much better the guys who know how to remove it than struggling yourself which I tried some years ago on another car.

Easiest and least damaging way to remove the stuff is to pout wet newspaper on it, like you do with old rego stickers. not sure how well it will go for you now though as it sounds like most of the tint is off, but i placed a soaking wet paper across my window and the tint peeled off a dream. good luck.

once you get the film off , then you will want to use a strong ammonia based product ( think windex type stuff ) or you can buy cloudy ammonia from super market and delute it. the ammonia will break down the old adhesive. eucaliptus oil will sometimes do the job too but would cost more i think. make sure you have plenty of ventalation , epecially when doing the rear screen. it can get very fumey.

spray it on and let soak for a bit. scrub with an old rag or piece of old towel. you can use a scouring pad but be careful if you use the green ones as they can scatch some glass, try and find the white scouring pads. you might have to go to a professional cleaners supply shop to find the white ones.

depends a lot on what kind of car you are tinting but if it has any kind of curve in the glass then .... no its not as easy as they make out.
( i was a window tinter for 9 years running my own business.)

you must have been lucky . very rarely will that work on modern tint adhesives.

i used to charge $60 to remove the old tint, that was pretty much the going rate around se qld when i was doing it until about 4 years ago. doubt it would have changed much.

it is not a money earner for the shop , sometimes it would take hour and a half, sometimes most of the day. never know until you start. the back window is the hardest if you want to save the rear demister as you cant use a scraper or you will take off the heater element on the demister lines. .

i used an entire newspaper and kept it very wet. you can also use a steamer, but i was dealing with 40+ year old glass and didnt want to take the chance. took my time and peeled a little back at a time and added more water.

Let your fingers do the walking mate, try to stick with the small guys and get a good quality tint, most of them are now anyway, perhaps someone here with more experience could name a good brand that a small guy could put on.

In sydney ive used premier tint with great success around $200 for a metallic?? i think dark tint im was still going strong when the car went and actually on my late dads volvo ive got sitting at the bottom of my drive its still as good as it was 15 years ago from them too, not sure if they are still going though.
