Default TV volumes

Does anyone know if different TV stations are transmitting their programmes at the same volume?

The reason for the question...
watching a show yesterday on one channel and the volume was enough to hear it clearly.

Changed channel and volume was blasting out...enough to get me to change the control on the remote from 15 back to 10...a reduction of about a third or so.

Anyone else had this?

Peter.

Yep, seems to be more noticable at night, the difference between 9 and the others is very noticable.

Sometimes the difference is noticeable between HD and SD stations too.

But yeah, ads volume is extra annoying.

I don't know if different TV stations are transmitting their programmes at the same volume

You will probably find it is the loudness rather than the volume. Dynamic range comprehension allows them to play silly buggers while maintaining the same volume.

I don't recall anything about channel hopping; levelling advertisements has been addressed in the past.

If you are bored, skim through ACMA's "Report Investigation into Loudness of Advertisements on Commercial Television July 2002" by ABA

They refer to FACTS, now known as FreeTV Australia which has a Code of Practice - Loudness in Advertisements

Yeah ads usually appear louder even if broadcast at the same dB as tv shows due to compression etc, the similar sort of processing techniques that turned Metallica's Death Magnetic album into a smudgy clipped overcompressed piece of crap. Using the "loud" setting on your car stereo does a similar thing by compressing and/or equalising the different audio frequencies, but not actually changing the volume, to make it sound louder.

I notice it mainly due to having the surrond sound on all the time. This cuts out when you go to adverts so It usually seems quieter to me

I remember ACA doing a show on advert volumes and the reporter asked a channell rep if the volume changes for adverts and he said "No the volume does not change from show to advert..it just sounds louder"
To which the reporter said "well if it SOUNDS louder then it IS louder!?" the rep was stumped for a reply.

Yes, this is extremely noticable between different programs on Austar and especially during the ads where they sound about 5x louder than the show you are trying to watch.

Also while I'm at it, on Austar since 2 years ago, 95% of the ads are life insurance plans, I pay $100 a month roughly for people to try and sell me life insurance.

Harvey Norman are the biggest culprits.

I cant count the amount of times ive almost had a heart attack from hearing a HN advert during the footy (during which i like to have the volume up for atmosphere).

Is it really necessary for the voice over to yell?

They do it, so when you get up off the couch and getting food, or going for pee break, you can still hear the Ad's.
Who would have thought that we "want" to listen to Ad's during pee break?

OneHD is really bad during the F1's and MotoGP.

The USA just recently adopted some viewer frustrations about volumes and stuff, on TV.
I think it went through legislation about having the volume of Ad's to the level of the TV show.

Only way to make it stop, is to do an "Egyptian" style protest at TV stations, lol. Or someone goes deaf, then sues them.

7Mate, GEM(NineHD), and ONE HD are louder than their standard-definition digital channels. I know this because I usually have my TV volume on 20 for SD channels, but I have the volume reduced to 15 on a HD channel.

I'm not sure if there is anything different between channels like SBS1 and SBSHD since I hardly ever watch those primitive public broadcaster networks.

also check in your settings, some tv's have an audio correction between MPEG & Dolby Digital, i wound back the mpeg a while ago on our tv's and theres not that much difference.
But i dont use the tv speakers, might only apply to the digital output
