Ok, I think we can get off what performs better in a crash. Bar the one person, we can all agree that a 5 star car is a 5 star car, regardless of which is bigger.

I still thing large cars are safer, regardless of the statistics or ratings.

All things being equal they usually are in a head on with another car. The problem with crash-tests with a car hitting a wall is that force exerted is equivalent of hitting another car head-on at the same speed and with the same weight. The smaller or lighter the car the bigger chance you will hit something heavier than you - that then throws all the crash test results out the window.

Yes that segment is booming. I can see why (I still prefer a falcon/Holden utes) especially when they are quite versatile.
