Prior to March'05 I lived in a nice 4-bedroom house on 5 arces, with double lockup garage (auto doors), and a 20"x40" shed .. so all my cars [ AU ute, SV8, '69 Javelin, '69 Dodge Phoenix, 70 Plymouth 'vert ] were neatly stored away and under cover. In respect to my wife's wishes, we sold up and moved to another town, currently in a rental looking for another property. This rental is a 2-bedroom with NO car cover .. and LOTS ot trees in the yard; ie. you cannot park anywhere in the yard without being under a tree! As a temporary measure I put up one "temporary" carport for the SV8 and I've just bought another for the AU (still to put up). However, my wife is now talking about building and staying in this rental for at least another year .. maybe two! Meantime, the Phoenix sits under a gum tree under a tarp, the Javelin is in a lean-to at my parents house and I'm paying rent to store the Fury in a 3mx6m storage shed .. and the SV8 and AU are sitting in the yard filling up the plenum chambers with leaves, getting covered with dirt, peed on by the neigbourhood cats and waiting for a large tree to fall on them! Should I just put my foot down and tell my wife to settle on a "near-enough" property, or at least insist we move to a better rental (and higher cost) ... or am I just being pedantic?

Pedantic, of course not!
Time to put the foot down, cars are obviously a passion of yours and should be a prime consideration in the choice of property. l am into HiFi, you cant imagine how many houses we passed up over the years because of an unsuitable room. Its all about a compromise that suits both partners so take a stand  :

Those cars are going down in value not up (referring to '69 Javelin, '69 Dodge Phoenix, 70 Plymouth 'vert ), ya need to get them undercover ASAP.

My wife is a good, safe driver .. she knows I fuss over cars, so she tries not to do anything "wrong" .. *BUT* she really is on the edge of the non-automotive-enthusiast group. Basically she appreciates nice cars but she will not really go out of her way to look after them. If they are parked out the the weather all the time, that's OK .. it's just a car. If they get leaves and sap all over them all the time, that's OK .. it's just a car. Want to buy a property on a 4km dirt road which will wreck just about every component? .. that's OK .. it's just a car. However, she wants nice new cars (ie. ones you just get in and drive) The rate I'm going, I'm looking at trading in the SV8 on a AUI XR8 just so I can let her drive it into the ground and I won't loose as much as her wrecking the SV8 (no offence to AUI XR8 owners here .. simple financials)

Compromise time I think.
She's obviously keen on building so you need to let her have that (dont forget to "build" a nice big garage with HEAPS of power points, network points etc while you are at it). In the mean time you need to either have the cars in storage or more to a more appropriate place. Simple compromise, you get what you want, she gets what she wants

just a idea........ stand wife under tree for a week to get a first hand afect of sun
rain hail sap + leaves stuck in her crevases....... 2 things may happen........ you get new place with big shed...... or she leaves you. in which case you can return 2 old shed.. You May be lonley but ur cars will still luv you lol + good luck

Go and look for a empty factory to rent and store the cars in that. It might make the wife hurry up and decide. Store a spare bed at the factory as well just in case.

My husband is also very passionate about cars. We have five cars at the moment which we have to some how protect. At the moment we have the FBT and the ELGT in the garage, my Futura out in the weather, his XR8 ute out in the weather and his toy XR8 in a shipping container on our land. We have to build a shed, well he has to anyway a 21 x 10m shed just to store all of our cars eventually.
Hubby is lucky he has an understanding wife.... Have you looked into hiring a shipping container, we have one and it only costs $22/mth to hire for as long as you want, I know it is not very attractive in the yard but it does the job. |

It's funny... I had a BF F6 Tornado to show off, so I took it up to my family's place. When I pulled up in the driveway, my Dad was standing there drooling and then my step-mother walks out and goes "It's just a car, like that car over there" which just happened to be a beat up old Datsun 200B

I would not have let my wife put us in a property without garage in the first place. Move up another level for the cover of the toys !

Have to cover the cars. It kills me seeing my wagon having to park under a gum treee. The same tree that crushed quite literally my last car. Compramise and then tell her how you feel about the situation.

Like everyone has said its all about comprimise!
My gf and i have an understanding, i dont whinge when she spends money on shoes and she doesn't whinge when i spend money on my car. She has over a 100 pairs of shoes, i have a 74 XB Coupe, i know i'm going to win out in the end :P

We are renting and building a house as well ,I would only look at rentals if they had at least a double garage for my RS and the wifes Outback, as it is Im not happy my wagon is out in the blistering sun ,but not for too much longer now the slab went down this week which means the sooner the tripple car shed goes up and more room for more toys...............
