Covert Hoon Cameras in WA

I spotted a lot of boxes with cameras today, in the suburbs Subiaco, and in Floreat. I didn't know that there were a hoon problem in those suburbs. I'm not sure if I like the big brother watching you aspect of having all these cameras. Maybe Police are trying to capture mobile phone drivers instead of hoons?

Some of the camera boxes were placed in intersections on the concrete dividers between the lanes. If find this distracting for the drivers and quite possibly there will be accidents by drivers looking out for all these cameras.

Reading all the comments that people have left, it is interesting that people have a real issue with drink drivers, but the so called "hoons" are targeted.

I would like to see drink driving come under the hoon act, not just high range but all drink driving. Not only would you risk losing your licence, but you risk losing your car for 30 days (in Vic). I think it would reduce the amount of drink drivers on the road. Will not stop the problem but may help combat it.

Whilst a lot of people support these actions, the government won't stop chasing "hoons". The real issue is something is done before someone is convicted, or even proven to be in the right or wrong. Unfortunately I know this all too well myself, as I am in the midst of fighting a Hoon charge, for doing nothing wrong. 1 x house deposit later, I might be finished fighting.

Does anyone know what the statistics are for people dying from "Hooning" or at least being seriously injured??

I believe this statistic would need to not include speeding as according to law, they are two different categories, whilst they can be similar in nature.

Whilst I hate seeing people "Hooning", the severity of punishment could be disproportionate to other driving offences, which may be deemed more dangerous.

I guess my point is that I think our governments may be going about addressing the issue completely the wrong way. All these new laws and cameras are just reactive and its not going to stop the issue.

The problem with the word Hooning is that it has been made up by media. It is slowly making way into legislation, but when you are charged with a "Hooning" offence you are actually charged with careless driving or something similar like not in control of a vehicle, excessive smoke etc. This is the offence that is read out in court not "Hooning".

So there are no stats for Hooning but plenty for careless driving and such and I would assume they could find stat for injuries and deaths using these charges. So it is hard to show stats for "Hooning".

We're a nation of hoons. Nothing will ever change.
While people are allowed to attend motorsport events & events like summernats, then people will want to play up on the road.

The only way to stop hooning is to give everyone a Prius & not be eligible for a licence until the age of 50 !!!

Hoons cars die soon enough when they treat them like that anyhow. Leave 'em to it. Plus it keeps tyre shops in business.

The Commissioner said they are targeting hoons because it is the number one complaint from the public, so I suppose he has to try and address the issue.
My number one complaint is scum robbing/bashing innocent people, and second, burglaries.

$7000 a camera and the quality of the footage can be captured better on a potato.

You would think so, but I think towing cars from a boose bus sight would be more of a money maker.

How many cars do get caught nightly doing burnout and such compared to how many people get caught at a boose bus sight.

I would think the boose sight site would be more profitable.

It looks like they can only take side shots so easy to run the things over. There's a lot more worse things happening than someone doing a skid.
