RACV/NRMA car inspections

Hey everyone,

At some point I plan to buy an NCII Fairlane, this obviously requires a good inspection done.

I was told some time ago by a car salesman that RACV do not do vehicle inspections if the car is at a used car yard, they 'don't do work on site' he said.

Now, this seemed a bit fishy to me, is this true? If so, does the same apply to the NRMA? I was under the impression that I could call either of these services and just direct them to the car yard and tell them which car to inspect.

Clarification please?

G,day mate In S.A. we have the RAA which i think is the same as NRMA/RACV.
When i worked for Toyota we had RAA inspections done all the time however being a large dealer with a service department we were able to provide a hoist for underbody inspections. I am sure that you could get an inspection done at the yard but how thorough is the big question.
If you have a mechanic that u trust, just ask the car yard to allow you to take it to your mechanic for him to go over. Any descent car yard who wants to sell u the car should have no problem with that if its as good as he tells u it is

why don't you call RACV and find out for sure, rather then just rely on the second hand info here.

The NRMA certainly does inspections in car yards, one yard in Sydney has all its cars inspected, if a yard wont dont buy.

crikey! calm down. i wasn't directing my comment at you, but at the thread starter. i actually started writing my comment before you posted yours, but got interupted before completing it. By the time I'd posted it, you had already submitted yours, so it was not in any way, meant as a personal attack.

also, my comment was not written with any arrogance in mind, but simply as a suggestion to just go straight to the source and find out for sure in a few minutes, rather than wait for an hour for information that is not always correct.

Have you ever had a inspection done by one of those mobile mechanic type guys. We needed a full report on a VT Acclaim for finance once that we were buying from my inlaws and the guy told us it was in great nik, which was funny considering it had a cracked rear main housing and had been scraped underneath. It also had a roller door fall on the roof and scratch it but at 8k with 52ks on the clock they are minor complaints.
All im tryin to say is that they may well tell you directly that they do inspections on site but wouldnt it be better to get your own bloke to go over it for you?
I would rather argue with him over minor faults that you find than with an independant, remember your mechanic wants your continued business.

Reason I posted this question here is because I imagine people would know the answer and all the information i've gotten from these forums in the past has been accurate.

I would have rang RACV/NRMA to confirm anyway, but this purchase won't be for a while yet so I was just getting some preliminary info.

bought a dual-cab ute last year for the missus... RACV inspected it

might as well have not tho... friggin useless they are

pay a REAL mechanic $50 to inspect it (like doing a roadworthy cert)
and then pay a panel beater $50 to have a look too ;)

still cheaper then RACV
